NATIONAL RANKINGS (Sept. 25): Shaw gains, Curtis falls hard

The Louisiana Sports Writers Association might not give any love to Shaw in regards to moving ahead of Bastrop, but MaxPreps apparently is on the Eagles' bandwagon. The Westbank school jumped 48 spots this week to get into the top 30 nationally.

But Shaw didn't make the biggest jump. Heck, the biggest number I saw this week in regard to local schools actually was connected with a loss. Guess who?

Yep. Curtis. The Patriots played a recognized large-school power in Texas, lost on a last-minute score and was on the road. The reward: Curtis dropped 84 spots to No. 125. (more) ...

Normally I only care for the top 100 with maxpreps, but man, when you see a nearly 100-spot drop, that's news. Especially when it's a nationally recognized power.

Nevertheless, for the most part, it's that same gang of teams sticking around the top of the list. Acadiana and Bastrop remain strong, West Monroe moved in for Curtis and Shaw moved up.

State-wise, Curtis didn't lose much with the loss. Shaw didn't gain much with it's win over Ehret, which didn't fall far. Following me? Good. I still find it shocking that East St. John is living off history, remaining in the top 25 despite a robust 1-3 record. Of course, East St. John's losses have come to Curtis, Acadiana and Bastrop. Sheesh.

The biggest news, though, is that Curtis is no longer ranked in the USA Today poll. It's the first time in as long as I can remember. No Louisiana team is in the newspaper's poll, actually. I find that shocking, especially with all the good teams in this state.

Anyway, here we go with the national polls.

No. 25 Acadian (-2)
No. 28 Shaw (+48)
No. 44 Bastrop (-10)
