WEEKLY PICKS: Sept. 14-15

It's that time again. Make your picks. Going once. Going twice. Sold! To Mr. Ron Held, winner of week 2's pick'em. He went 7-3, narrowly defeating Soccer Freak's 6-4 record. Week 1 winner Christopher Mire failed to email in, so he's stuck at 9-1 on the season.

As for me, I improved by two games, going 8-2 in the second week. I goofed on the Salmen and Jesuit wins. I'll try not to do that again, as Friend of the Blog Chris Finch, a proud Salmen High grad, might readjust my attitude on life.

I'm now 14-6. I feel better about myself than I'm sure Virginia Tech feels after that pasting in Baton Rouge. (more) ...

This week's 10 games are intriguing. There are some good games out there. We should begin to find out which undefeated teams are for real, and which 1-1 teams are better than their records show.

As always, this is open to the public. If you're competing to get your name on the front page of the HS Gametime blog, please email in your picks (and scores are preferred, as well) to bhandwerger@wwltv.com by Friday at 7 p.m. Better yet, post your picks in the comments section of the blog. Full disclosure. That's what I'm all about here at the...hmm. I don't have a name for the blog.

Yet.

Week 3
(home teams in bold, unless at a neutral field, i.e. Gormley, Memtsas, Yenni, Behrman)

Hahnville 27, Cox 13
Acadiana 34, East St. John 10
Northshore 24, Bonnabel 3
Ehret 35, McDonogh35 0
H.L. Bourgeois 27, Higgins 17
Curtis 21, Salmen 7 (Finch, we're still friends, right?)
Lutcher 31, Thibodaux 10
Ben Franklin 20, Newman 14
O.P Walker 28, St. Augustine 27

Game o' the week
Holy Cross 28, Chalmette 10
Maybe it's something with the name Brady, but Chris Brady is doing his best to imitate former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn. And with Notre Dame looking like a second-rate high school team this year, we see just how good Quinn really was for the Fighting Irish.

Holy Cross's Brady has thrown seven touchdown passes in two games. He has compiled nearly 400 yards passing. And as a third-year starter, he's coming into his own.

It's not that I don't think Chalmette is good, it's that I get the feeling that Holy Cross is on the verge of doing something special this year. Chalmette's wins over McDonogh and Douglass are nice, but the Tigers have a quality win over a tough Slidell team that is 0-2 by a total of eight points.

And for all the hype the offense is getting, the Tigers' defense is pretty durn good, too. Brother Martin's 14 points came on Holy Cross' backups.

What is your prediction for the Mandeville game?

Dave, I'm glad you asked. Mandeville is a lot better than people think, and if you believe our polls we've put up, people think highly of Mandeville. Walker is 0-2, with nothing resembling a close game. I say Mandeville 34-10. This is not an official pick, however.

As for Soccer Freak, I'll have to tell you my views of Saban at a later date. They're not very nice, I'll tell you that much. The Franklin-Newman game was a tough one for me to pick. However, until my boy Tim Picone proves he can't handle the rock, the arts and the books, I have no reason to doubt the high-flying Falcons.

My picks for week of 9/14 -9/15:

Hanhville
Acadiana
Bonnabel
Ehret
Higgins
Curtis
Lutcher
Newman
O.P. Walker
