WEEKLY PICKS: Sept. 28-29

OK, last week wasn't a good week for anyone. Well, I take that back. McDonogh 35, Hahnville and a bunch of other teams certainly enjoyed their weeks. They won.

Those who participate in the weekly pick 'em didn't do so well. And that certainly includes me. Prep Guru, a new friend of the blog, and Professor, also new, picked up wins this week, going a fantastic 7-3. Ron Held, still leading the group percentage-wise for the season at 73 percent, went 6-4. I went 4-6.

Friend of the Blog Soccer Freak apparently was on vacation. That's no excuse, SF. We want picks every week. If it takes picking Salmen weekly, that's what we'll do. (more) ...

Season Totals, beginning with those who made picks a week ago (percentages are calculated for those who have picked at least 2 weeks:
Me (26-14) (65 percent)
Ron Held (22-8) (73 percent)
Prep Guru (7-3)
Professor (7-3)
Soccer Freak (14-6) (70 percent)
Mark (8-1)
Mr. Held Over (6-4)
Christopher Mire (9-1)

On another note, I’m still looking for more participants in the weekly pick ‘em. We went from four participants to three. That’s going the wrong direction. We want more than four.

To play the game sweeping the Crescent City, just leave a comment in the comment section (you have to register. I promise it’s safe) or email me at bhandwerger@wwltv.com . Picks should be in by Friday at 7 p.m.

Here are the 10 games to pick, including Game o’ the Week.

Week 5
(Home teams in bold, unless at neutral field, i.e. Gormley, Memtsas, Yenni, Bertolino or Behrman)

Fontainebleau 17, Northshore 7 (NEW as of 2:50 p.m. 9/26: Northshore is without starting quarterback Jervious Epherson for the rest of the season)

Mandeville 21, Slidell 14
Cox 31, Karr 27 (@ Memtsas)
Newman 37, De La Salle 10
Shaw 28, O.P. Walker 0 (@Memtsas)
St. Paul’s 24, Hammond 14
Destrehan 24, Ehret 10 (@Memtsas)
Salmen 36, Reed 7 (@ Gormley)
Belle Chasse 21, E.D. White 20

Game O’ the Week
Jesuit 24, Holy Cross 21 (@ Gormley)
Here I go again, making another game of the week pick that’s hard to explain more than gut. Jesuit and Holy Cross both picked up their first losses a week ago. Both were playing excellent football in getting to 3-0, but couldn’t pull off a fourth straight win.

Jesuit’s loss came to Catholic-Baton Rouge by a score of 16-9. That’s not bad when you’re on the road playing No. 6 team in Class 5A on the road. Jesuit is allowing 10.5 points per game, while scoring 30, though that’s skewed thanks to a 66-0 drubbing of Reed to open the season.

Holy Cross opened the season by surviving against Slidell. Then the Tigers got on a roll, pounding Chalmette before getting handled by Vandebilt Catholic 42-14 a week ago. Then again, like Jesuit, that came on the road to a team receiving votes in the Class 4A poll.

I think the game depends on Holy Cross’ defense. Which unit shows up? The one that shut out Chalmette or the one that gave up 42 points? If it falls somewhere in between, Jesuit has a good shot at picking up the win.

Comments? Questions? Think I don't know what I'm talking about? Like my writing? Dislike my picks? Comment or email me at bhandwerger@wwltv.com
