LSWA POLLS (Oct. 16-22): Curtis back on top; Shaw still in waiting

It might have taken Class 2A Evangel losing to the consensus Class 4A Bastrop, but John Curtis has taken over the top spot in 2A. But the Patriots aren't overwhelmingly No. 1, with Calvary Baptist earning five of the 12 first-place votes and coming in four total votes short of Curtis.

And then there's Shaw, which is still waiting to have a close game. Despite losing quarterback Ramaad Robinson to a knee injury, the Eagles still pushed past Belle Chasse by 20 points. Maybe that'll all change this week when the No. 2 Eagles play No. 7 Vandebilt. (more...)

But Shaw also is still waiting to move into the top spot. That could be hard as Bastrop, the No. 1 team, has won 36 in a row and doesn't look like it will lose anytime soon. So, Shaw will have to continue to be the next in line.

Other thoughts:
* Where's East St. John? OK, I know, it's hard to put a 4-3 team in a top 10 poll when there's a plethora 7-0, 6-1 and 5-2 teams. But don't you think ESJ should start getting some votes here? It just beat Dutchtown, last week's No. 8 team. The Wildcats also are on a three-game win streak that has been impressive. Maybe if they beat No. 3 Destrehan, the Wildcats will at least garner some "others receiving votes" points.

* South Plaquemines and Kentwood are both receiving one first-place vote. Kentwood is No. 3 in 1A, while South Plaquemines is No. 4. You've got to feel bad for Hamilton Christian. Yeah, you might be No. 2, but nobody really believes you have a chance to be No. 1. I mean, you've got two teams behind you receiving first-place votes.

* It's nice to see Hahnville and Rummel get some respect. Hahnville pushed Destrehan, and maybe should have beaten Destrehan two weeks ago. Rummel has looked darn good since a season-opening loss to Shaw, who we all know to be one of the best teams in the state. Both Hahnville and Rummel moved up in he 5A poll by three spots.

Why does anyone even care anymore about where Curtis is ranked. It's easy to stay on top when you can recruit and hold kids back a year so by the time they are seniors they are stronger and faster. Also I just happened to catch a Curtis baseball game once from the outside of the fence of the field they were playing. Two of Curtis' players were using language directed at the opposing right fielder that made me embarrassed. Maybe they should drop "Christian" from their school name.
