LSWA RANKINGS (Oct. 23-29): Holy Cross enters picture in 4A
One little blip on the record can really have an affect on how voters view a team. Just look at Holy Cross. The Tigers lose to Vandebilt -- albeit by a large margin -- and can't seem to sniff the top 10 in Class 4A.
Finally, after eight weeks and and four consecutive big wins, Holy Cross (7-1, 3-0 District 9-4A) has entered the picture. And it happens just in time for possibly the Tigers' biggest matchup of the season. Holy Cross travels to undefeated and No. 4 Franklinton this week for what amounts to the district championship. (more...)
After watching Holy Cross a couple of times this year, it's easy for me to say its a top 10 caliber team. We'll see for sure Friday.
Other thoughts I've taken from the new polls:
* Class 2A is, indeed, the toughest classification in this state. Well, at least to move up and/or get any recognition. 5A certainly is a beast of a group and so is 3A, but 2A is the only top 10 where nobody moved. We're assured of movement after this week, however, because No.1 Curtis (6-1, 2-0 District 10-2A) plays No. 4 St. James (6-2, 3-0) at Bertolino on Friday.
*It's nice to see our northshore folks get recognized finally. St. Paul's (6-2, 5-0 District 7-5A) has won six in a row since an 0-2 start, while Mandeville (6-2, 4-1) has won four straight since falling to the Wolves. They're only in the "others receiving votes" category, but it's something.
