Metro Top 5: Destrehan pulls ahead of Shaw
Last week was a good week to get the Metro top 5 poll started. No. 2 Destrehan hosted No. 3 Hahnville in a classic game, No. 1 Shaw lapped Morgan City and No. 4 Vandebilt Catholic rolled over Belle Chasse, a team that was knocking on the door to my poll.
What did we learn from last week's games? I'll tell you (at least what I learned).
Destrehan has what it takes to go all the way to the state championship game. No one really knew how the Wildcats would respond if they got down. Now we know. (more) ...
Hahnville is still good, despite losing. It’s not easy to go into a hostile environment, jump on one of the most talented teams in the state and hold on.
Vandebilt is better than a lot of people expected, and a lot better than it’s getting credit for right now. The Terriers have one of the best ground games in the area and at least four players who can carry the ball. That’s scary if you’re an opposing team.
And Shaw? Well, Shaw is just being Shaw. Winning with defense and an offense that appears to be beginning to hit on all cylinders. I wouldn’t want to face the Eagles.
1.) Destrehan (6-0), next – Friday vs. St. Amant, 7 p.m.: Could this be the dreaded “overlook” game, what with the Wildcats beating Hahnville a week ago and East St. John on the docket next week? We’ll see just how good a coach Stephen Robicheaux is if he can get his group focused for the seventh straight week.
2.) Shaw (6-0), next – Saturday vs. Belle Chasse, 2 p.m., Memtsas: It’s hard to take Shaw out of first place. But it’s hard to keep Destrehan down after winning the way it did. Shaw has yet to be tested. That’ll probably come next week against Vandebilt. Until then, it’s up to the Cardinals to try to score on the Eagles.
3.) Vandebilt Catholic (6-0), next – Friday vs. Cox, 7 p.m., Memtsas: Is there a team in the area that has a scarier ground attack? I don’t think so. The Terriers chewed up 411 ground yards against a Belle Chasse team that had been fairly solid on defense up to that game.
4.) Hahnville (5-1), next – Friday vs. East Ascension, 7 p.m.: Hahnville showed heart a week ago against one of the best teams in the state. Nevertheless, Hahnville will have to bounce back this week to remain in the running for a district title, even if it is a long shot at this point.
5.) Holy Cross (5-1), next- Friday at Salmen, 7 p.m.: Chris Brady is still on fire. The defense is still stout. But now we’ll see where the Tigers really are and if they’ve fully recovered from the debacle at Vandebilt a few weeks ago. Salmen will be a test for Holy Cross.
Knocking on the door: Newman (6-0), Curtis (4-1), Ben Franklin (5-1), Rummel (5-1), Lutcher (5-1), Belle Chasse (5-1), Fontainebleau (5-1), Northshore (5-1).
OK, now it’s your turn. Let me know who you think are the best five teams in the area. Give me an explanation as to why I should change my order or add a team.
