NATIONAL POLLS (Oct. 16): Win a game, lose votes. Say what?

Here we are, again posting the Maxpreps national rankings and again writing it with a befuddled frame of mind. I understand that the polls can't be static. Teams win, and sometimes the wins are more impressive than others.

But I don't get how West Monroe can beat Southwood, now a 1-6 team, and move up 13 places, while Shaw can beat Belle Chasse, now a 5-2 team, and move down seven spots.

It doesn't make much sense to me. I wonder how things will end up once postseason play gets here. Do you think this means national pundits don't believe in Louisiana football? Let me know your thoughts. (more...)

Shaw held the state on its back a week ago, but those pesky Bastrop Rams have again knocked the Eagles from the top. After Bastrop dispatched with Evangel, the then top ranked team in the LSWA Class 2A poll, the Rams were bumped up 36 spots to No. 22.

Then there's Acadiana, with beat Barbe 42-28, the then No. 6 ranked team in 5A, and lost 17 spots. You've got to be kidding me.

Polls don't necessarily matter. I've stated that I understand that in previous blog entries. But getting noticed is a good pat on the back. There has to be some rhyme and reason into the ricidulous fluidity of the maxpreps poll. The Web site does a tremendous job of compiling information on the high schools all over the United States. It's a tough job.

And as last week, USA Today, the only standard bearer if you may, doesn't have a single Louisiana team ranked. Oh well. At least the poll makes some sense. No teams lost, so there was little movement.

Questions? Comments? Want to vent about Shaw moving down and Curtis not being in the top 100 or anything else? Email me at bhandwerger@wwltv.com or leave a comment.
