WEEKLY PICKS (Oct. 12-13): Mark coming back with a fury as the stretch run begins
Six weeks into this thing we call Prep Pick 'Em and we have yet to have a perfect week. I blame El Nino. We've had five come close, with Mark the latest to attain a 9-1 record. His only miss? Higgins' win over Ehret, a game not a single picker got correct. So, don't feel bad Mark. Fate was against you.
That said, myself, Ron Held and Professor were near that, the three of us coming in at 8-2. Ron Held's kin Mr. Held Over, on the other, appears to like going for upset picks. And in so doing, fell to 5-5 this past week. I get the feeling that if he were picking the English Premier League, he would be doing much better. Go Red Devils! Click here for (more) ...
Finishing out the rest of the picks, Prep Guru went 7-3 and Soccer Freak went 6-4 following a two-week absence. We’ve got our eye on you, SF. Don’t let us down again.
Christopher Mire, after a 9-1 start the very first week, has missed the rest of the season.
For the season, this is how things shake out, including those who haven’t picked every week:
Me (43-17, 71.7%)
Ron Held (30-10, 75%)
Prep Guru (23-7, 76.7%)
Soccer Freak (20-10, 66.7%)
Mr. Held Over (17-13, 56.7%)
Mark (17-2, 89.9%)
Professor (15-5, 75%)
Christopher Mire (9-1, 90%)
This past week was the first time we had eight people, including me, pick. That’s what I like to see. But how about we get more. Tell all your friends. They can get their names out on the internets.
All you have to do to play is post your picks in the comment section below, or email them to me and I’ll put them up. They can be anonymous, or you can use your real name. it doesn’t matter. Picks should be prior to 7 p.m. Friday.
This week’s magnificent 10, including the Game O’ the Week (listed last, please pick):
Week 7
(Home team in bold, unless at a neutral field, i.e. Gormley, Memtsas, Behrman, Bertolino or Yenni.)
Hahnville 24, East Ascension 17
Mandeville 17, Fontainebleau 10
St. Paul’s 21, Northshore 7
Curtis 31, Riverside 17 (@ Bertolino)
St. James 28, Newman 24
St. Charles 21, PJP II 13
Rummel 27, St. Augustine 7 (@ Yenni)
Jesuit 13, Chalmette 10 (@ Gormley)
Ben Franklin 21, De La Salle 17
Game O’ the Week
Holy Cross at Salmen
While our dear friend Juan Kincaid will be all the way out at Newman’s game against St. James, I’ll be heading to the Northshore for Holy Cross’ District 9-4A showdown at Salmen.
This one could be good. Holy Cross (5-1, 1-0) averages 32.5 points per game. Salmen (3-3, 0-1) gives up 14.6 points per game.
Salmen held a high-powered Franklinton offense to just 19 points, and kept things close with Curtis by giving up only 28 points.
Holy Cross’ only loss, on the other hand, came on the road, albeit to a very, very good Vandebilt Catholic team. Still, I think the Tigers are just too much.
Barry Wilson has his team believing right now, and as long as he has quarterback Chris Brady running the offense, Holy Cross should be favored to win three of its final four games, Franklinton being the only game it might not be.
Holy Cross 28, Salmen 14

A couple of issues i would like to address.
1. Prep Guru and Super Prep Girl obviously don't understand that Salmen High School is not only playing in front of its fans... but also in the hearts and minds of displaced hurricane victims still struggling to recover from the 'big one.' Holy Cross is not.
2. I hardly call 6-4 a letdown because as you know... I pick against the spread.
And with that, here are your picks:
Hahnville 31, East Ascension 16
Fontainebleau 17 Mandeville 13,
St. Paul’s 28, Northshore 14

--Soccer Freak, where are you finding these so-called spreads? Are you using my guesses as the spread? If so, you're a genius.
