WEEKLY PICKS: SuperWebGirl-What happened?
Last week proved that games once thought of as "gimmes" aren't exactly in the bag before kickoff. Of the eight people who picked a week ago, only two had Ben Franklin over Clark, which up to that game had been playing well. And only one person picked McMain over Douglass, another team that was playing better football.
But the real story of this past week's picks are that SuperWebGirl came down from cloud nine. After back-to-back 8-2 weeks, her luck ran out. She went 3-7. But at least she wasn't alone. SoccerFreak gave her some company with the same record.
This week will decide the regular season champion. Professor has a sizeable lead, getting 78 percent of his picks right. Nevertheless, Ron Held, at 75 percent, has a realistic shot at moving past Professor. But they have to differ on a few picks for that to happen (more...)
In other Pick ’Em news, latecomer J.A. Borne led the pack this past week, going 7-3 in as tough a week as we’ve had here at the Handy Blog. Kudos to him.
This past week:
Me 5-5; Prep Guru 5-5; J.A. Borne 7-3; Mr. Held Over 4-6; Ron Held 5-5; SuperWebGirl 3-7; SoccerFreak 3-7; Professor 6-4.

Not a big week for big games this week, but that lends itself to some tough picks. I’m expecting nothing short of brilliance from my team of pickers, however.

Game O’ The Week
Curtis at Newman
This game is probably easier to pick than I’m making it out to be. I tend to over think situations. Just ask my parents. But this isn’t the Curtis team of old, and neither is Newman the team you remember from before.
Newman, other than a big loss to St. James, has been on fire. And Curtis is coming off of its first in-state loss since early in the 2005 season.
How will Curtis react, and can Newman take advantage of a Curtis team suddenly wondering what’s going on?
I’m going with a gut feeling here, but I think J.T. Curtis is going to have his team turned around and heading in the right direction. It's not that I don't believe in Newman. It's just that I think Curtis will be back on its state championship track. Curtis 31, Newman 20

Hi Brad,
It seems to me that since losing to St. Paul's earlier in the season by one touchdown, Mandeville has grown exponentially stronger each week. Can the same be said about St. Paul's? I don't honestly know. But four times this season the Skippers have beaten opponents by over 40 points, and four times they have held their opponents to a single touchdown. 7 5-A district titles aside, I would like your opinion ... at this point in the season, which is the better team? Thanks as always for your insight.
From Bradley: Dave, this is a good question. It's hard to compare teams in a scenario like this, as it has been awhile since they played. I'm not sure who is better, but Mandeville certainly is playing better right now. I think what you have to look at is the reintroduction of Michael Mauti to the defense. Since he's been back, the team has excelled. And when the defense does well, the offense has more plays to run because it's on the field more.
StJames over Kentwood,
Destrehan over Dutchtown,
Fontainebleau over StPauls,
Jesuit over Augustine,
BelleChasse over Morgan City,
CountryDay over StMartins,
Rummel over Bro.Martin,
Clark over Reed,
Slidell over Nortshore,
Newman over Curtis

Here's the problem with my picks. I don't really get to watch/read about/hear about to much prep football. Some weeks I am forced to look at "Me's" picks and read his insight to make my selections.
But that's come back to haunt me. It's like going into a bathroom after someone has a bowel movement... then when you come out someone is waiting to go in, and they think YOU had the bowel movement. Basically, you are blamed for someone elses crap.
Having said that... here are my picks, untainted by "Me's" advice.
Kentwood
Destrehan
St. Pauls
Jesuit
Belle Chasse
Country Day
Rummel
Reed
Slidell
Curtis
From Bradley: Lovely explanation. I think I'm done eating for the day.
