Favorites falling fast in 5A
Boy, talk about your bracket-buster. In 5A seeds 2, 3, 4 and 5 are done. Rummel is 6th and it faces a tough challenge against Hahnville Saturday. Ehret is 7th and still alive and the 8th seed (Higgins) is gone.
There will also be 6 local teams in the final 8 – two of those from the Northshore with Mandeville and St. Paul, possibly three from the River Parishes with Destrehan and Dutchtown in and Hahnville waiting to play Rummel.
Either way it is looking good for a local team – or TWO, to be in the finals. Destrehan, which whistled past the graveyard several times in its ultra tough district, is looking better and better with its favored top foes all being beaten.
Convention says that Destrehan will make the finals and that the Hahnville-Rummel winner will have a very tough assignment with Acadiana.
In the 4A classification, the marquee matchup for next weekend is likely when defending state champion and second-seeded Bastrop travels to Franklinton. I’ll bet you can get whatever seat you want at the movie or a restaurant that night in Franklinton between kickoff and the final gun.
4A is moving much closer to form with a chance that all 8 of the top seeds could remain alive after Saturday.
In 2A, the top four seeds continue on and that could mean a rematch between Curtis and a district rival in the finals for a third straight year.
