Playoff seedings proved out

Those who did the seeding in the prep football playoffs knew what they were doing.

Actually, I think it’s a computer-generated points system; however, four of the five top seeds are in the finals. There also are two number twos and two number threes. Not bad.

Destrehan, Shaw, Parkview and Curtis showed they merited their top spots by making the finals. Destrehan and Curtis each swept through their opponents. Destrehan outscored its four playoff teams 179-40 to sweep into the finals, where it'll face Acadiana, who was a 14-seed.

In 4A, it will be a rematch of the finals from a year ago. In that game Bastrop prevailed over Shaw. This time, Shaw enters as the top seed after a tough win over O.P. Walker.

In 3A top-seeded Parkview will take on Westlake.

In 2A, top-seeded Curtis will get a rematch with St. James, a team that defeated it 16-14 in the regular season. The Patriots defeated Evangel 29-10 in the semifinals to complete a four-game sweep, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 168-16. St. James, the second seed, had little problem with third-seeded Calvary Baptist.

Meanwhile, in 1A, South Plaquemines didn’t get much respect. Despite slamming all of its regular season opponents, the Hurricanes merited only a No. 3. In the postseason, they’ve outscored teams by a combined 237-39, and they’ve made it into the finals to face West St. John, the 13th seed, which lost its first five games before winning out and then going unbeaten in the playoffs.
