Class 1A Finals: South Plaquemines vs West St. John - SP wins 48-8

Posted by bhandwerger | 11:58 AM

Well, South Plaquemines and West St. John are playing now. There's a nice crowd making some nice noise.

You should join us. But if you can't, read on here for updates.

This one is all but over. Well, it's definitely over, but there's still time left on the clock. I don't think SP will score again, so that's a 48-8 win for the Hurricanes two years after Katrina devestated the landscape in lower Plaquemines.

3:16 p.m.
Third quarter stats:
SP total yards 276 on 37 plays; WSJ total yards 60 on 45 plays
SP TOP 12:46; WSJ TOP 23:14
SP turnovers 3; WSJ turnovers 4

but here's the stat that matters: Ridge Turner 105 yards and 2 touchdowns on 12 carries, and 5 of 16 for 126 yards and 2 TD. And that doesn't count the rushing touchdown he just recorded to begin the fourth quarter.

3:11 p.m.
In a game that just won't end, the third quarter finally just finished. But on the first play of the fourth quarter, SP hit like a 150-yard pass. OK, it wasn't that far. But Turner just scored on a 3-yard run.

So now SP is knocking on the door to 50 points with an entire quarter to go. The Canes have scored at least 50 in nine of their past 10 games.

SP scoring drive: 3 plays, 80 yards, 1:35 TOP

SP 48, WSJ 8

2:52 p.m.
Another score by South Plaquemines. This time Turner decided he would throw it instead of run it. He connected with Dylan Boutwell for a 32-yard touchdown. Trey Stewart's extra point made it a 34-point game. Yawn.

SP scoring drive - 5 plays, 59 yards, 2:02 TOP

SP 42, WSJ 8

2:45 p.m.
Stats just came in from halftime. They're pretty much what you would expect with a score of 35-8 at the break.

SP Total yards: 205 yards on 29 plays; TOP = 9:32
Ridge Turner: 9 rushes for 93 yards and 2 TDS; Lyle Fitte 8 rushes for 26 yards and 2 TDS; Turner 3 of 12 for 86 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT

WSJ Total yards: 52 yards on 30 plays; TOP = 14:28
Romell Howard: 6 rushes for 21 yards; Tyler Lewis: 5 rushes for 17 yards
Dray Joseph: 5 of 8 for 22 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT

In other news, i'm pretty sure we're listening to the soft sounds of Stadium Rock circa 1991. Right now "Dance, Dance, Dance, strike it up" is on. Not sure if that's the title or not. But we also heard "Whoomp there it is." And now tootsie roll just came on.

I feel like I'm in lower school again. All I need is for Mrs. Williamson to discipline a boy named Hoyt and I'd be in a total flashback.

2:17 p.m.
Stop me if you've heard this: SP scored. Again. In fewer than two minutes. Yup, this is getting out of hand.

That's now 35 unanswered points by the Canes.

This time the touchdown was set up by the defense as Beau Fitte sacked Dray Joseph, forcing a fumble that SP's Felix Barthelemy picked up and returned to the WSJ 16.

It didn't take long after that for Lyle Fitte to score from the 2.

SP scoring drive - 4 plays, 16 yards, 1:45 TOP

And now it's halftime. Whew.

SP 35, WSJ 8

2:06 p.m.
The teams - every one of them who have played so far - are in a giving mood during this, the holiday season. And WSJ just gave the ball back to SP. The Rams were driving, move 31 yards in four plays.

But Dray Joseph threw a ball that Trey Stewart deftly grabbing for SP. Now it's the CAnes ball and there's a touchdown.

Wow. Wow. Wow. Not only is Ridge Turner fast, so is SP wr/rb Lyle Fitte. On a pump-and-go, Turner hit Fitte almost in stride. The West St. John, defender on Fitte at the outset, had no chance. Fitte just ran right by him.

And then Turner ran in the 2-point conversion. So, the Canes are now on serve. Or something like that.

SP scoring drive - 1 play, 66 yards, 12 second TOP

SP 28, WSJ 8

2 p.m.
Well, SP continues to control this game, much to the dismay of WSJ head coach Laury Dupont, who will retire after this game.

And it's basically SP qb Ridge Turner doing all the damage. This time, he scored on a 4-yard run. The call for the TD was questionable, but the replay shows that while his body wasn't in the end zone, the ball was.

The Hurricanes converted a third-and-five and a fourth-and-goal.

SP scoring drive - 8 plays, 34 yards, 2:53 TOP

SP 20, WSJ 8

1:46 p.m.
1st Q stats:
SP total yards = 95; Ridge Turner 4 carries, 82 yards, 1 TD; Lyle Fitte 4 carries, 13 yards, 1 TD

WSJ total yards - 20; Dray Joseph 3 of 4 for 21 yards, 1 TD

1:41 p.m.
We're at the end of the first quarter...finally. It only took about 40 minutes. That's a far cry from last night's Curtis-St. James game, where the first half was over in about 45 minutes.

SP is up 14-8, but the game has no semblance of steady football.

WSJ just came out on the first play of the 2nd Q with a double pass. I like it. We need to see more of it. And to beat SP, that might just be happening.

1:37 p.m.
It might have taken awhile, but SP finally took the lead. I'd like to say this game has settled down, but it really doesn't appear that way.

SP is moving the ball, but only because Ridge Turner is running. He has almost all of the Hurricanes offense. But then again, WSJ hasn't proven that it can stop Turner.

SP scoring drive - 8 plays, 43 yards, 2:23 TOP

SP 14, WSJ 8

1:20 p.m.
So this is what Laury Dupont was worried about. SP quarterback Ridge Turner turned into Darren McFadden and absolutely outran the entire West St. John offense for a 56-yard touchdown. No one was even close.

Now we're tied. And SP has turned the ball over three times. Yikes.

SP scoring drive - 1 play, 56 yards, 9 seconds TOP

SP 8, WSJ 8

1:16 p.m.
South Plaquemines isn't ready for this game, that much is clear. West St. John just punted the ball about 50 miles high and about 12 yards. But a South Plaq player, who shall remain nameless, touched the ball and bobbled it. West St. John recovered.

1:11 p.m.
Seriously, is there something about the Dome that says you have to turn the ball over? SP just turned the ball over again, this time when Terrance Nathan intercepted Ridge Turner way down the field.

West St. John again has the ball. WSJ head coach Laury Dupont surely must be happy with the way this is going. We're fewer than three full minutes into the game and his Rams have forced two turnovers and scored a touchdown off the first.

1:07 p.m.
Well, I was right. There was a score fewer than two minutes into the game. Only, West St. John came up with the points.

Quarterback Dray Joseph had a beautiful play-action fake to the receiver in motion, then hit Jessie Silas on a post. Silas caught the pass and pointed at the TV camera.

Something tells me WSJ head coach Laury Dupont is happy with the points, but not thrilled the clock didn't run too much.

WSJ scoring drive - 4 plays, 28 yards, 1:10 TOP

WSJ 8, SP 0

1:04 p.m.
Here's something I wasn't prepared for - South Plaquemines has a delay of game to begin, drops a pass on first and-15, and fumbles the ball away on second-and-15.

West St. John has the ball and is now driving from the South Plaq 28.

12:53 p.m.
West St. John won the toss and South Plaquemines will receive. In other words, we may have our first points in about 2 minutes. Well, a little while longer than that, because we've still got the national anthem to go through.

But you get my point. South Plaq has scored more than 70 points twice this season.

Welcome back. Glad you could join us. We're back for three more football games in the Louisiana Superdome, beginning with today's 1 p.m. 1A final.

It's an hour before kick off, and there's no one in the Dome. But they did just finish playing Avril Lavigne. Doesn't that make you want to come down and watch the game?

I'll begin updating in a little while. Thanks for reading.
