Class 4A Final: Shaw vs. Bastrop - Shaw falls 38-14

Posted by bhandwerger | 4:19 PM

We're back online folks. I'm back to blogging after some technical difficulties. Just think of the minor lapse in live blogs as that indian screen you used to get in the days of black and white TV.

Hope that South Plaquemines - West St. John game got you interested in some football.

This one should be good.

Barring some strange development - like Bastrop trying to score with 1:20 to play - this one is over. Bastrop controlled this game from the outset, and Shaw's two four quarter touchdowns made it closer than it really was.

Yes, the game was that much of a blowout.

My game story will be posted momentarily. It'll be updated later on with quotes and more stats. Enjoy.

6:55 p.m.
Hot off the press, third quarter stats.

Shaw finally is in positive net yards with 48. Of course, that's coming on 45 plays. Of course, a 1.06 yard per touch average isn't going to get you far.

Bastrop, meanwhile, had 381 yards going into the fourth, and has definitely surpassed the 400-yard mark by now.

Shaw is on the board. You've got to hand it to Andrew Starkey, Shaw's quarterback. Despite getting absolutely mauled throughout the game, he has hung in there and played hard.

It paid off with a 5-yard touchdown pass to receiver Ron Walker.

Same result, different way. Bastrop scores again, making Shaw pay for turning the ball over in its own territory.

The fumble looked questionable on replays, but it doesn't matter. No replays in high school football.

But Shaw showed some fight. Literally. There was pushing and shoving going on throughout the series, and head coach Scott Bairnsfather made his way between the hashmarks to get some of his players off the field. He also took the opportunity to bark at the officials, whom I'm sure he's not happy with right now.

If you're a Shaw fan, you're probably not reading this blog anymore. But if you like bad things, then you'll like these statistics.

Shaw ended the first half with minus-2 total yards. That includes 14 yards passing. To be fair, quarterback Andrew Starkey's minus-31 yards include sacks and such.

Then there's this: Starkey just got lit up by DeAndre Bradshaw, who forced a fumble, picked up the loose ball and scored a touchdown.

With 8:20 left in the game, Shaw might be better off letting Destrehan or even South Plaquemines play the rest of the game.

Shaw finally got a positive in this one: It came up with a stand at the goal line as time ran out in the first half. The defense stood up Randall Mackey at the 1 and the clock expired.

Bastrop is the better team in this one. It's playing with speed and is absolutely owning Shaw in the trenches.

Halftime: Bastrop 26, Shaw 0

Yup, it's the Randall Mackey Show in the Louisiana Superdome.

After two games Friday, we've had two blowouts today. And both times, the team that's dominating is led by a great QB.

This time, it was Mackey to Preston Coleman for a 6-yard TD.

At least the two-point conversion failed for Shaw.

OK, sorry about the technical difficulties. We're having problems at our home office the lovely New Orleans suburb of Dallas, Texas. So it's not a suburb, but they just want to be like New Orleans.

Regardless of my malfunctions, Shaw's are worse. Bastrop quarterback Randall Mackey is on fire.

In the first quarter, he threw for 98 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 63 yards and another score for a 20-0 lead. His third touchdown of the day was the nicest. He took the snap and lofted one of the most beautiful passes I've seen this year in college, high school or the pros.

It was a 72-yard touchdown pass that hit Reuben Randle in stride.

But the most telling stat is that through 12 minutes of this Class 4A rematch, Bastrop has hald Shaw to minus-2 yards total offense.

And Mackey strikes again. Moments after a 28-yard touchdown run was negated by a penalty, the Bastrop quarterback tosses a 10-yard touchdown to Josh Bradshaw and finishes it off with a 2-point conversion run.

The kid is good.

Mackey just scored again on a beautiful fake option pitch around right end. But, thankfully for Shaw, Bastrop was called for holding, negating the long touchdown run.

Sheesh. This could get out of hand if things stay this way.

4:42 p.m.
The bad is getting worse for Shaw. It's almost like that Mackey touchdown threw off the Eagles. On the ensuing kickoff, two players bobbled the ball before Bastrop tackled Shaw at the 2. 98 yards is a long way to go on a good defense when it knows what your doing - in Shaw's case, run Steffon Gray right, run Gray left, run Gray middle.

4:38 p.m.
So far, not much to report. Defenses have controlled this one. AS I say that, Bastrop quarterback Randall Mackey goes on a 50-yard touchdown run. He front-flipped forward into the end zone, getting an unsportsmanlike penalty, but I think he'll take that.

Mackey outrun the entire Shaw defense. It's obvious from that one play that Shaw's coaching staff is going to have to do something to make sure Mackey doesn't get outside again.

The extra point came up WAY WAY WAY short from the 18, thanks to the unsportsmanlike penalty.

The teams just entered the field. The previous game went about 10 hours too long. So, I'm going to write and hopefully keep you up to date here.

No, no hopefully about it. You'll be up to date.
