Ex-Hoover, Ala., coach set to coach in Georgia

Remember MTV's Two-A-Days? Remember Hoover's head coach Rush Propst? He's on the move.

Also, the LHSAA has released its soccer brackets. It's a banner time for local schools, I'll say that.

And who says weather can't have an effect on indoor games?

5A boys basketball poll becoming all about New Orleans area

At the beginning of the season, I was wondering how basketball would be around here. When Ken Ramsey put out his power ratings, I questioned even more how good basketball would be around here.

Apparently I only needed to let the season play out a little bit. The latest LSWA boy's basketball poll shows why.

The boys are coming on strong in Class 5A; Cox continues to dominate in 4A despite

Ponchatoula, Chapelle holding strong in girls basketball rankings

The AP has released the girls basketball rankings for this week. Ponchatoula moved up to No. 3 to hold strong as the area's top-rated team in 5A, while Chapelle is not far behind.

Cox is still ranked in 4A along with Vandebilt Catholic and Franklinton.

Is a top-rated QB recruit changing his mind on LSU?

Terrelle Pryor is what you would could call a media hound. The closer we get to national signing day, the more we seem to be hearing his name. What's the latest?

And a Baton Rouge player switches his commitment. No wonder people's heads are spinning this time of year every year.

Also, St. James head coach Rick Gaille was honored recently.

LHSAA Meetings, an updated blog

So, I'm sitting here in Baton Rouge at the LHSAA annual business meeting and I'm next to Alexandria Town-Talk ace Will Tubbs (you may know him from the various articles I've linked to). We'll be starting here shortly, and updates of important matters will be below.

Local coaches not keen on proposed LHSAA legislation

Several pieces of legislation dealing with high school football that were up for a vote Friday during the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s annual meeting have been tabled until further study can be done.

This just in: No vote on football this year

I just talked with Rick Gaille, St. James' head coach and athletics director, and he told me the football legislation most noteworthy - if you go to the dome twice and win, you move up; divisions of eight teams instead of classes; you can elect to play in the super division if you'd like - will go to committee instead of being voted on.

This means that, for now, this coming fall will go the same way this past fall did - power ratings w

Destrehan, Thibodaux boys lead locals in basketball power ratings

Friend of the blog Ken Ramsey is still hard at work, continuing to figure out power rankings for basketball. Though these won't decide who makes the playoffs, it's possible that by next year, basketball will follow football in using power ratings to determine postseason participants.

That said, let's take a look at this week's Wednesday power ratings.

Helen Cox continues to lead 4A. The qu

Menard coach meets father through 60-plus year old letters, and links (Jan., 22, 2008)

Here's a good one for you - what if your dad died when you were just a youngster, barely old enough to ride a bike. And then suddenly, a box of letters appears that your dad wrote a long time ago. Yep, that happened.

And more LHSAA meeting breakdown. What is getting voted on and whatnot.

Cox's Monroe knocking no one's socks off, and links

Sorry for the delay in posting these. I'm working the night shift tonight and got in a little late. But I know you've been checking in religiously, waiting for the all-important links to be posted.

Anyway, happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Here is one of my favorite quotes from him:
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

Hahnville WR Byrd goes to Auburn, plus links (Jan. 17, 2008)

Want to know who in this area plays football and also plays well in the classroom? I've got the state all-academic team ready to go, with a link to the full list.

Hahnville's Laron Byrd took a recruiting trip to Auburn. Will LSU's SEC West rivals steal a top-notch recruit from its backyard? And speaking of recruiting, Rivals has released its final top 250 list of 2008 recruits.

And then there's some craziness going on at a high

14-year-old Pats fan booed in Indy, plus links (Jan. 16, 2008)

Well, my minions, glad you could join us again for another exciting day in the national high school sports landscape.

I've got some good stuff for you today, including an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article on national rankings for high schools as well as an Alexandria story about the use of an ineligible player for one of the state's top teams.

LSWA Girls bball rankings

The same thing I saw in the boys poll holds true in the girls: Some teams are playing way too many games. There's little reason that some teams should be at 30 games already. High schools start playing basketball at the same time as colleges and I don't know of too many college that have played more than 24 games at this point.

The girls and boys have to be tired by the end of the season, and one could only surmise that their bodies wo

LSWA Boys Basketball Poll (1/15/08)

Well, the LSWA finally has released its first poll of the year for boys basketball. And, likely not a surprise, it's all over the place. Some teams with average records have found their way into the poll, and then there's Desire Street, which is 6-11 and still ranked. Not sure I get that.

It's striking to me how many of the teams I recognize from the football polls. There's obviously some sports factories out there playing and there's

Welcome back from the weekend. Hope you got some sleep and well deserved rest. I know I did. Sort of.

Anyway, I bet you're here looking for some links. There's a juicy one inside about a Missouri reporter who isn't enamored with Greg Monroe, a Helen Cox senior who signed to play at Georgetown as one of the nation's top recruits.

Ramsey Basketball Power Ratings (Jan. 14, 2008)

Friend of the blog Ken Ramsey has released Monday's power ratings for boys and girls basketball.

In boys, Helen Cox still is the area's leading boys team and Destrehan, at No. 12, is the highest ranked local team in 5A. Then again, your definition of local might be different. If that's the case, Thibodaux is ranked No. 10.

In girls, no area team is No. 1, but Hahnville comes in at No. 4 and Chapelle is No. 5.

Boys/Girls Basketball Power Ratings

Hello boys and girls. Got a new thing here at hsgametime.com. Ken Ramsey at kenramsey.com has given me permission to use his power ratings for prep basketball.

They're much like the football power ratings, with one caveat - They will not be used this year to determine postseason seedings as they are with football.

These aren't necessarily Louisiana high school links today, but they deal with former Louisiana high school players.

You know, someone like Joe McKnight, the former Curtis standout.

Or, you know, Glenn Dorsey, who prepped in-state before taking over in college.

Louisiana's top recruits have LSU on their mind

Pelican Preps web site has its list of top 30 prospects in the state, to no one's surprise, LSU is the choice of 12 of the top 30 and the Tigers are on the list for 11 of the rest. That they aren't on the list of 7 guys is not necessarily a surprise, because those guys might not rate highly enough for LSU.
