Hahnville WR Byrd goes to Auburn, plus links (Jan. 17, 2008)

Want to know who in this area plays football and also plays well in the classroom? I've got the state all-academic team ready to go, with a link to the full list.

Hahnville's Laron Byrd took a recruiting trip to Auburn. Will LSU's SEC West rivals steal a top-notch recruit from its backyard? And speaking of recruiting, Rivals has released its final top 250 list of 2008 recruits.

And then there's some craziness going on at a high school in Mobile County, Ala., in regards to job security.

Your links are sizzlin' hot and ready to go.

So, we're a little more than a month since football ended and I just found the All-Academic list. I apologize. I was searching the LHSAA site in all the wrong places. I'm going to list the local boys from the composite list; you can see the entire list broken down by class here. You must have adobe acrobat reader for that list, by the way.

Local smarties, listed by position:
Douglas McClung (Lutcher, OG, 4.0 GPA); Marquel Elzie (Kentwood, OG, 3.8837); Adam Roth (E.D. White, OT, 3.9090); Irvin Louque (Lutcher, WR, 3.9555); Jacob Allen (Vandebilt Catholic, QB, 4.0); Brian Logarbo (St. Paul, RB, 3.9803); Evan Benezech (Covington, D-line, 3.8810); Patrick Crowder (St. Charles Catholic, D-end, 3.7727); Alexander Lauricella (Curtis, DB, 4.0); David Schexnayder (Lutcher, DB, 4.0); Michael Olivier (E.D. White, Punter, 3.95); Scott Scharfenstein (Chalmette, Punter, 3.7955).

Congrats to all who made the list.

Rivals.com is finished ranking players for the 2008 signing class. The first Louisiana player doesn't appear until the 70s, and there are only six players in the top 250 from Louisiana / Rivals.com final list

As for the shenanigans in Mobile, check this out. Say you're coaching at Hahnville, and have been for years. Next think you know, the school gets a new principal. OK, fine. But all of a sudden, a meeting is called and you find out that, despite the success you've had at Hahnville, you have to reapply for your job. You might not get rehired. Well, that's happening at B.C. Rain in Mobile / Story from the Mobile Press Register by Mike Herndon What do you think about this policy?

Former Hahnville standout Darius Reynaud apparently decided that he didn't want to play college football for anyone other than Rich Rodriguez. Reynaud has declared his intentions for April's NFL Draft. Also, current Hahnville standout Laron Byrd recently took a trip to Auburn. / Story from the St. Charles Herald Guide by Mike Detillier Should Reynaud go pro?

Detillier was certainly active yesterday. He also wrote that Ed Reed, another local, has made it to the Pro Bowl / Detillier's story here

Seeding for the basketball tournament is never easy. But there are set rules to follow. That could change with next Friday's LHSAA business meeting. Coaches will vote on a new procedure to seed the basketball postseason, and it could begin as early as this year. / Story from The Daily Advertiser of Lafayette by Kevin Foote. Could basketball be seeded any worse right now? What do you think?
