Menard coach meets father through 60-plus year old letters, and links (Jan., 22, 2008)

Here's a good one for you - what if your dad died when you were just a youngster, barely old enough to ride a bike. And then suddenly, a box of letters appears that your dad wrote a long time ago. Yep, that happened.

And more LHSAA meeting breakdown. What is getting voted on and whatnot.

So, take the scenario about the father that I gave you a second ago. It really happened. A coach at Menard lost his father to a heart attack nearly 60 years ago. The coach - Wally Smith - barely knew his father. But when Smith's uncle died earlier this decade, he received a box with old letters. Some of the letters were from Smith's father to his Smith's grandfather. And through those letters, he learned who his dad was. Really interesting stuff. / Story from the Daily Advertiser

In Lafayette, there's a stink rising from a proposal to change the way football is classified. Mainly, some schools can elect to play up if they want to, and that would help Curtis out. But as written in the proposal, this top division would be limited to 32 teams. That won't pass, if you read what some coaches are saying. But if this limit is raised to 48 or so, it just might make it. / Story from the Daily Advertiser

And because I can't find the prep boys basketball poll on the AP wire - I'm calling shenanigans - I'll have to link to the Monroe New Star, which has the poll. Interestingly, Brother Martin plays St. Augustine tonight. Both are ranked or receiving votes in the 5A poll.

Finally, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a list of every head coaching vacancy in Georgia. Honestly, it's quite a few. Which makes you wonder if head coaching is worth it.
