Former Hoover High coach had too much power

Maybe it was MTV's two-year "documentary" of Hoover High's football program, or maybe it was the larger-than-life personality of former head coach Rush Propst, but people can't seem to get enough of the guy and the program he built.

Or, in this area, maybe it's because Curtis defeated Propst's Hoover team on TV and when the Bucs were nationally ranked and regarded as one of the top teams.

Carencro looking to make history against St. Aug

We're hitting a busy patch of sports here for in late February as winter sports transition into spring sports. The girls are in Top 28 time, while the boys are two rounds away.

Baseball has started and soccer has ended. Indoor track has given way to the outdoor variety.

But there's one thing that seems to remain constant: College football recruiting. And one high school athlete got good news recently - he's fully eligible. But

LSU gets commit from Leesville junior RB, 'Sky's the limit'

Didn't we recently finish signing day 2K8? Now we've got current juniors making their move for signing day 2K9. A Leesville running back is one of those as he already has committed to play at LSU. His coach says the "sky is the limit."

Boys Basketball 2nd Round Times set

Looking for good basketball this week? There's plenty of it as the boys enter the second round of the state playoffs. Eleven metro area schools host games, and seven more travel for games.

But the biggest one might be Helen Cox's home game against Washington-Marion, the team that put the Cougars out of the playoffs last year in the same round. And while Cox was the higher seed last year, it had to travel.

Postseason Brackets

The girls basketball teams are on the regional round, while soccer is just about finished.

Newman's boys soccer team is the lone representative from New Orleans proper in the boys side, though they are playing metropolitan area team St. Thomas Aquinas in the boys Division III finals.

On the girls side, Sacred Heart is carrying the New Orleans banner, also in Division III.

Peabody undefeated in 4A, still a long way to go

For only the third time in Peabody history, the boys finished undefeated in the basketball regular season. But there's still a long way to go before the season finishes the same way, and Harvey's Helen Cox should be considered a threat.

Earlier season matchup won't sway the St. Paul's, Brother Martin quarterfinal

Trevor Watkins is certain of one thing about Tuesday's Division I boys soccer quarterfinal between St. Paul's and Brother Martin – if the weather is like it's forecasted to be, both teams will be happy to be on Northshore.

Not only does Brother Martin's home field have no lights, it's natural grass. The Wolves' home stadium is lit and has artificial turf.

So should the rains blow in as predicted, the game can still go on unles

Wrestling Tournament: Finals Edition

Here's how we stand heading into the finals:'
Division I - Jesuit leads Catholic by nine points (210-201) and Brother Martin by 24 points (210-186). Jesuit has two finalists, Catholic six and Brother Martin six. For BM to win, it will need wins in every event. For Catholic to win, it must win two more finals than Jesuit. And for Jesuit, it must have Catholic win only one more final than it does.

Division II - Northside has 216.5

State Wrestling: Day 2 (updated)

Well into the afternoon, we have finally begun the consolations after a lengthy Division I semifinal round. The BIG news is that Jesuit is all but out of the race for the blue trophy now, trailing both Catholic and Brother Martin by nearly 30 points.

The finals are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. right now, and one would assume they would start on time.

State Wrestling: Day 1

I'm here at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, watching and learning wrestling. It's different. I'm a football, basketball and soccer guy. Alabama didn't have wrestling when I was growing up, so bear with me if I use wrong terminology.

That said, morning results are in. I'll update when I can with what I can.

Coaches ready for rest after signing day

LULING - Two days ago, colleges reaped the rewards of intrastate and interstate recruiting, signing high school players to bolster their football programs.

The likes of Les Miles, Bob Toledo, Nick Saban and Tommy Tuberville certainly have reasons to be happy.

But what about the high school coaches?

Signing Day

Mardi Gras ended yesterday, so what better holiday to follow up with than National Signing Day. And if you don't think this is a holiday, think again.

Folks head out to college campuses and camp out and drink and cheer and taunt. It's like a college football Saturday, only it's the first Wednesday of February every year and it's adults partaking in the taunting and work-skipping.
