Carencro looking to make history against St. Aug

We're hitting a busy patch of sports here for in late February as winter sports transition into spring sports. The girls are in Top 28 time, while the boys are two rounds away.

Baseball has started and soccer has ended. Indoor track has given way to the outdoor variety.

But there's one thing that seems to remain constant: College football recruiting. And one high school athlete got good news recently - he's fully eligible. But where is he going? And LSU received yet another instate commitment for '09.

For now, the tournaments are the top event in the state. And at Carencro High, history already has been made. Tonight, it would like to make even more history. Friday night against Catholic High, Carencro picked up its first postseason win ever. Tonight, it's going for its first home postseason win ever against powerhouse St. Aug.

And there's Singer's task tonight. It plays at Reserve Christian in Reserve. Yes, the same Reserve Christian that won titles in 2002, '03, '05, ' 06 and '07. Not really sure what happened in '04, but it certainly stuck with the boys from Reserve. What is Singer to do?

But it's not all basketball here at HSGametime.com. With baseball season churning towards its next gear, one pitcher already has recorded a no-hitter. As rare as they are in professional baseball, they seem to occur more regularly in high school ball. Not that Simpson senior Dustin Fulks cares who it came against and when.

OK. I know. This is why you're really here. There's some football commitment news.

I'll start with LSU, which has picked up yet another instate commitment for the '09 class. This one comes courtesy of Bastrop defensive tackle Josh Downs. Downs earned first-team All-State honors as a sophomore, the followed that up with another All-State year in 2007. Bastrop won state championships both years.

And finally, I can't imagine what it's like to be an athlete and be one who is somewhat highly recruited, only to have test scores keep teams away from you. Well, there's good news for one Louisiana teen - several weeks after national signing day, Pineville's Damien Jackson got his ACT score back and he's now qualified. Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Michigan all recruited him, but Alabama and Ole Miss over-signed this past spring. Where is he going?

One more thing. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - one of my favorite papers - did a 10-person slam dunk contest with some of Atlanta's top dunkers. Some of the slams are just nasty. My vote was for Shaq Barber, but Derrick Favors and Travis Leslie might have two of the sickest dunks. And yes, I did just use the term sick.
