State Wrestling: Day 1

Posted by bhandwerger | 4:49 PM

I'm here at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, watching and learning wrestling. It's different. I'm a football, basketball and soccer guy. Alabama didn't have wrestling when I was growing up, so bear with me if I use wrong terminology.

That said, morning results are in. I'll update when I can with what I can.

Want to know how many people came and watched wrestling? Wonder no more. 4,853 folks watched sessions one and two. That's 446 more than a year ago.

Also, Brusly has all but won Division III, leading by nearly 50 points heading into tomorrow. The fight is for second place, and Basile leads Redemptorist by eight points and North Vermillion by 10.

If you're trying to figure out what this state wrestling tournament is like, put in a VHS tape of the Karate Kid and fast forward to the tournament scene.

Division I
Jesuit leads over Catholic-BR by two points (45.5 to 43.5), while Brother Martin, Rummel and Mandeville are all in third, fourth and fifth, respectively. St. Paul's is 23 points behind Jesuit with 22.5 points.

Division II
Shaw leads Northside by 4.5 points. Holy Cross is in 8th place, while Belle Chasse is 16th.

Division III
Brusly, from my professional eye, appears to have locked up first place already with 101 points. Basile is in second with 55. But I guess they can come back.
