Minor hiccup accompanies 4A baseball seedings

For some odd reason, the LHSAA doesn't release the playoff seedings for every division/classification of baseball at the same time.

I don't know the reasoning, but if it's because it supposedly makes it easier to keep mistakes from happening, well, they need to work on that. Continued...

The big boys haven't been seeded yet - 3A, 4A and 5A get announced Wednesday and on April 29 - but there's a mixed decision on whether the seeding went well for classes 2A, 1A, B and C.

LHSAA releases baseball qualifiers for 2A, 1A, B & C

There aren't a lot of 2A teams in this area, but Curtis and Newman will represent in that classification while 1A will see a decent chance of a New Orleans team advancing far.

LSU picks up commitment; Mackey going JC route

They - and i don't honestly know who "they" is other than people I have talked with - say recruiting is all about building relationships. Well, LSU's latest commitment proves that's a true theory.

Spring football practice dates and game (updated)

According to LHSAA rules, spring practice for football may start on April 21 and run 15 days, including a spring game. But those 15 days can come any time before August, as I understand it.

Not every school begins on the first day, however. Many wait until baseball and/or track and field finish so they can have their full roster available.

And not all have spring games. Most do.

Apparently, lawmakers want the future children of Louisiana to be OK with finishing up below average. They have tabled the proposed law that would be raise the minimum GPA to 2.0 to be considered eligible for athletics.

Curtis product McKnight ruled ineligible at USC

Former Curtis standout Joe McKnight has been ruled academically ineligible for the spring term at Southern California, a.k.a. USC.

But not to worry McKnight fans, he should be good to go for the fall.

Fishermen help raise money for paralyzed Ponchatoula player

I have chronicled the story of Ponchatoula's Bryce McKinney on this site over the past couple of months.

He arrived home in the middle of February and has been going through rehabilitation ever since.

But on March 1, the town of Ponchatoula held a fundraising event downtown and by all accounts, it was a success.

Thieves strike Evangel High

Evangel has a proud tradition of athletic excellence over the years. At least one group found a way to at least try to keep Evangel down this postseason.

OK, so maybe it wasn't Evangel's opponent in the opening round of the softball playoffs. Regardless of who it was, someone stole all of Evangel's bats.

Some coaches mixed about raising GPA standards

As was chronicled last week, one state lawmaker is trying to raise GPA standards for Louisiana high school athletes. Currently, a high school student must maintain a 1.5 GPA to be eligible for state athletics.

State rep Rickey Hardy wants to make it a 2.0. Now, in general, a 4.0 is an A, a 3.0 is a B, a 2.0 is a C and so on and so forth. So, currently, we're saying a mid-D average is good enough to play high school sports.

When all-district votes get it wrong

Coaches have a lot on their mind. I get that. But I'm going to have to agree with Chris Quebedeaux of the Crowley Post-Signal.

Notre Dame's Ali Lucas got shafted. And pretty big-time. She helped her team to a second-place finish in district and also aided in Notre Dame's win over district champion Northwest, the only district loss for Northwest.

Lafayette getting the royal treatment

Lafayette's boys won the class 5A state title about a month ago. The back-patting and the congratulations have yet to end, though. It's not like Lafayette is a small town, either. According to census.gov, as of 2006, Lafayette boasted a population of a little more than 114,000 people.

Where art thou Perrilloux?

Former East St. John star quarterback Ryan Perrilloux - the same guy who became the 2007 SEC Championship game MVP - is still missing from LSU's football practice field. He's blessed with talent. But obviously, he's having a hard time getting his life straight.
