Jesuit, Brother Martin earn top 10 seeds in baseball

The Class 5A baseball brackets are out, and lo and behold, local powers Jesuit and Brother Martin have earned top 10 seeds and home games that go along with that. (Continued...)

They'll join No. 32 seed Grace King, No. 16 seed Mandeville, No. 8 Northshore, No. 28 West Jefferson, No. 12 Hahnville, No. 20 Ponchatoula, No. 29 Ehret, No. 14 Slidell, No. 15 Destrehan and No. 18 Rummel.

Brother Martin earned a No. 6 seed and Jesuit a No. 10.

To me, the biggest shocker is Ehret getting only a No. 29 seed. Sure, the Patriots stumbled in the last week of the season, but prior to that, they were all but owning everyone they played. We'll see how it shakes out and if Ehret can beat East Ascension in its opener.

Sticking with baseball, I don't know what's going on over in Monroe, but they must be feeding their kids something special. After the Class 5A baseball brackets were released, the Monroe area collected its fifth No. 1 seed this season.

There are only seven divisions in Louisiana high school sports.

The others: Claiborne Christian in Class C; Ouachita Christian in Class 1A; Sterlington in Class 2A; Neville in Class 4A.

A Vandebilt softball player signed to play college ball at Okaloosa-Walton Junior College. For two years, she'll be living near pristine beaches in Pensacola, Fla. Not bad.

Pope John Paul II picked up its first-ever state softball title this past weekend, and it did it despite a coaching change prior to the year.

The Lady Jaguars finished the season with only one loss. That's not bad for a team that lost its coach before the season started.
