Firing a winner: Why?

Several interesting finds this morning in state newspapers.

Though we're certainly getting to the slow time of year when there's very little to report, there is still movement out there.

Movement that surprises people, like canning successful coaches. (Continued...)

Take for instance, why Glenmora or Claiborne Christian would fire winning managers.

I'm not sure which one is more interesting. Certainly I don't know the reason for either firing, but it's rare you see such successful coaches canned.

Let's look at Glenmora first
. Larry Stafford just finished his 19th season as head coach. In 18 of those years, they made the playoffs. They made it to the state tournament five times in his tenure. The coach thinks there was a vocal minority who pulled the strings.

Vocal minority? That's one strong minority if that's the case. But like I said, I don't know what happened.

Then there's the case of Claiborne Christian coach Stuart Miller. In his first year as head coach, he led his team to the Class C state baseball title, the school's first. His reward was not a raise or a contract extension or anything like that. No, his reward was the pink slip.

I don't really understand.

If these were decisions made because these coaches were failing the students in the classroom, not teaching the students, then I get it. But I can't imagine that's the case in both instances. Maybe one.

--------

Destrehan and Hahnville each finished District 6-5A at 8-7 during this past baseball season. As such, no coach of the year honors or player of the year honors for either school. However, a total of six Tigers and Fighting Wildcats made the all-district team.

--------

If any of you were at the Class 5A state championship football game, you'll remember when Destrehan knocked Acadiana's starting quarterback out of the game briefly with a shoulder injury.

The player who came in - Louis Hollier - stepped up and did a more than admirable job of keeping the team going. He even tossed a touchdown pass.

Well, now it's his time to take over and this spring was his first taste of being the true team leader.
