Vandebilt top program in the state?
Brent St. Germain over at the Houma Courier brings up a good point: Shouldn't Vandebilt Catholic in Houma be considered the top program in the state this year?
His column - and yes, it's a column. Ergo, it's his opinion. - is playing off of a recent Sports Illustrated story that claimed John Curtis was the best program in the state during the 2007-2008 school year. (Continued...)
Let's take a look at what St. Germain claims puts Vandebilt over the top:
- A state championship in boys and girls swimming.
- A state championship in boys and girls tennis.
- A state championship in girls soccer.
- A state championship in softball.
That all helped bring Vandebilt to a grand total of 420 Southern Ford Cup points, 40 more than the next closest school in any classification.
John Curtis, ranked by SI as the state's supreme athletic program, didn't even finish in the top 3 of Class 2A.
What did the Patriots do to garner such praise?
- They won a state championship in football.
- They won a state championship in girls basketball.
I suppose the fact that football and basketball are two of the tougher sports to win state championships in carries a decent amount of weight.
But Vandebilt did finish in the state quarterfinals in football in Class 4A, the classification I find to be the toughest in the state.
So I agree with St. Germain.
But do you?
