Hurricanes causing scheduling conflicts statewide
Southeast Louisiana isn't the only area that was affected by Gustav, and now, with Ike still swirling in the Caribbean before heading into the Gulf, coaches are once again wondering what to do with schedules.
And a quick glance through state newspapers shows that everyone is affected, even those in areas that didn't sustain damage or power outages due to Gustav. (Click for the rest of the story)
In Baton Rouge, where power outages are still plentiful, games are going on, but they're going on early. That's because, despite the latest evidence that Hurricane Ike might be heading elsewhere, the coaches don't want to take a chance and lose games two straight weeks.
Over in the Lafayette region, schools are fighting the clock to try and find new teams to replace games that were canceled. The same thing is happening in Monroe.
Here in New Orleans, several games have been moved up, as well.
Wednesday
- Country Day vs. De La Salle at Bertolino
- St. Amant at Lutcher
- West Jefferson at Mandeville
- Jesuit at Fontainebleau
Additionally, Curtis' game against East St. John was canceled Curtis picked up Capitol for Thursday night.
Belle Chasse's game against Central Lafourche has been canceled and Belle Chasse picked up John McDonogh on Friday night at 7 p.m.
Speaking of Belle Chasse, it's representative of tons of schools in the New Orleans metro area. The Cardinals haven't seen another team in three weeks, head coach Bob Becnel said.
They scrimmaged Northshore three weeks ago when lots of schools canceled because of Tropical Storm Fay. Their game this past week against South Plaquemines was canceled because of Hurricane Gustav. And their game this week against Central Lafourche was canceled because of the destruction and power outages around Raceland/Mathews, where Central Lafourche is.
On Thursday, Becnel said he had 15 players at practice. On Friday, it was 30. Yesterday, the first day of school since Gustav blew through, he had all but four players.
