Week 7 LSWA Poll: Bradley's thoughts
I'm still flabbergasted that Destrehan isn't No. 1. I don't vote. Wasn't asked to as I'm not a member of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
But I'll tell you what I think and that the fact the Wildcats aren't No. 1 is mind-blowing. This is a team that won 15 straight a year ago and is 6-0 this year, beating every team without a struggle it has faced.
That includes arch-rival Hahnville, previous No. 4 Ehret and a Higgins team that is much better than anyone expected.
Acadiana, the team Destrehan beat in the championship game, has been No. 1 for most if not all of the season if I remember correctly.
How does that happen?
Well, Acadiana lost Friday night and the Wildcats picked up two more first-place votes. So Destrehan is only two votes out of first now. And while the LSWA poll ultimately doesn't matter - it doesn't factor into the power ratings - it's still a point of pride.
Of course, I'm sure Destrehan head coach Stephen Robicheaux will find a way to get something out of the slight.
Other thoughts:
- Bastrop lost for the first time in 49 games Friday night when it lost 28-22 to Evangel. The Rams fell to No. 2 and still retained first-place votes. I don't have a problem with this. Bastrop was playing with fire earlier in the season against East St. John and it caught up to it. However, I expect this super talented team to refocus and get back on a roll.
- Helen Cox, after losing to Hahnville earlier in the season, is moving back up the charts in 4A. The Cougars are No. 7 right now, up a spot from the previous week. I felt like, prior to this season, Cox would be one of the teams to beat in the area and after a stumble, it is proving me right.
- O.P. Walker got Tyrone Duplessis back last week and got back on track, beating Istrouma 24-18. The Chargers had looked susceptible the past three week, losing to Hahnville, holding off Shaw and losing to Karr 6-2. But with Duplessis back, I expect O.P. Walker to be back in contention in 10-4A.
- John Curtis continues to be No. 1 in 2A. No surprise there. But Evangel jumped Calvary to No. 2 despite Calvary remaining undefeated. Beat a team on a 49-game win streak and funny things happen. Like jumping an undefeated team.
