Playoffs: Second Round
by Evan Chevrier
Lake Oswego @ Canby
This is the spot where I was supposed to be writing about the big rematch between Lake Oswego and Jesuit. But the Cougars through a wrench in those plans, and now they're hosting a home game. I heard stories this week, about Canby parents that normally go to all the games, skipping it last week, because they didn't think they had a chance. I'll bet they'll be there Friday.
The Lakers have the state's most explosive running back in Zack Young, but Cougars back TJ Gorman is almost as impressive. Gorman gave Jesuit all kinds of problems last week, and will likely do the same this week.
The difference is this, Canby's defense will not be able to slow Young down, and won't put enough points on the board to match the Lakers.
Prediction: Lake Oswego 31 Canby 21
Lincoln @ David Douglas
I ran into Lincoln coach Chad Carlson this week, and jokingly accused him of sandbagging this season. He smiled, and said "I'm just wondering which team will show up this week." The Cardinals put on their best performance this season, in a 55-28 blowout over Roseburg. But this team has struggled without their star quarterback Conner Kavanaugh, who graduated and moved on to PSU.
But Roseburg is no David Douglas, at least not this year. The Scots have an explosive offense, and have now won seven straight games after a rough start.
This might be the most competitive game of the night, but if you want to see it, better cut out of work early, its a 2:00 kick at PGE Park.
Prediction: Lincoln 35 David Douglas 31
West Linn @ West Salem
Will a one week bye help or hurt the Titans? Of course, its a great chance to get healthy and rest up. And the coach gets an extra week to study tape of the two possible opponents. But time and time again, we've seen teams come out rusty.
At the same time, this is a team that hasn't lost since week one, and that was to Lake Oswego. They're well coached, and have a ton of great athletes.
The Lions meantime are also hot, having won eight of their last nine games. But Friday, they'll have to play their best game of the season, and catch the Titans on a an off-night, because West Salem always finds a way to win.
Prediction: West Salem 28 West Linn 27
