Competing in 93-degree heat against a field representing 37 states, the North Kingstown girls cross country team captured fifth place in the Nike Race of Champions at the Great American Cross Country Festival, held last weekend for the first time at Spain Park in Hoover, Ala.
The Skippers were not initially accepted into the elite race until after their performance at the Injury Fund Carnival at Goddard Park earlier this month, said coach Keven O’Neil.
Relying on the team’s trademark pack running strategy, the Skippers received strong efforts from Allie Stasiuk, Alexa Mazur, Caitlin Crawford, Mary Najarian, Erin Brennan, Monica Black and Marissa Hayward.
A number of other schools also made sure that Rhode Island was represented well that day.
La Salle took 18th in the featured race with sophomore Jeanne Christiansen leading the way.
On the boys side, senior All-Stater Steve Wood placed 13th in guiding Hendricken to an 18th-place team finish in the Nike Race of Champions.
Competing in the Girls Invitational Race, defending Rhode Island girls state champion Coventry placed fourth, paced by sophomore Caitlin Grimshaw (13th place) and junior Lindsay Paiva.
The Oakers were also represented in the Boys Invitational Race, as A.J. Johnson took sixth.
Dr. Michael Wiggins and his staff at the Providence-based Foundry Sports Medicine & Fitness have agreed to shed some light on the issue of injuries and how to avoid, as well as treat them, through weekly tips here at the projo.com High School Sports Blog.
Kai Aboulian is a physical therapist and athletic trainer at Foundry Sports Medicine.
Here he answers some questions about what to do if you get hurt:
What should I do if I suffer an injury?
Whether an injury is acute or chronic, there is never a good reason to try to “work through” the pain of an injury. When you have pain from particular movement or activity, STOP! Continuing the activity only causes further harm.
Some injuries require prompt medical attention, while others can be self-treated.
When should I seek medical treatment?
The athlete should call the health professional if the injury causes sever pain, swelling, or numbness.
The athlete can’t tolerate any weight on the area.
The pain or dull ache of an old injury is accompanied by increased swelling or joint abnormality or instability.
High school athletes should see the team athletic trainer or team physician as soon as possible.
These health professionals will treat the injury and refer the athlete to the proper health professionals for further rehabilitation.
What is the difference between “good pain” and “bad pain”?
It is common among athletes that some discomfort is part of athletic activities and is necessary for the improvement of performance. For muscle strength to increase, the muscle must see some increase in stress over what it is used to seeing, and this stress is usually perceived as the “burn" in muscle during activity. This mild “burn” is what we call “good pain” and is the basis of the popular phrase, “no pain, no gain.” This pain should be short-lived and during the activity only.
If there is some discomfort after exercising, it should be short-lived and not carry on for hours or days. Fatigue after a good, strenuous workout is also a sign that the exercise is pushing the limits of the athlete’s physiology, but it too should not be destructive. The fatigue that lasts days means the individual’s physiology has been excessively challenged, and this means that the muscles and the energy stores are not being replenished after exercise. This more chronic fatigue after harmful exercise is called “over-training,” and it is a sign that the individual is doing too much exercise too rapidly. If after appropriate rest the fatigue continues, it may be a sign of other medical problems and the individual should consult a doctor.
What are the signs of “bad pain”?
The muscle, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bones of the body are livening structures that react to the stress of exercise very slowly. If they see stress too fast, they cannot respond in time and begin to fail. The causes of the failure can be too much stress too fast, or it can be accumulated stress over time. When this occurs, each one of these tissues responds a little differently and begins to produce what we call “bad pain.”
For example, when muscles that have not been exercised for long periods of time see a lot of stress, they respond by getting “sore.” Muscle soreness typically occurs if the athlete does a new exercise to which you are not accustomed, or if you do a familiar exercise too hard. This soreness typically begins within a few hours but peaks around two days after exercise. This soreness is called “delayed onset muscle soreness,” and it actually reflects muscle damage. A little soreness or discomfort means that the muscle has been stressed, but if the muscle is exercised too much, the muscle can become very sore to move and touch, and may even swell. In severe cases, the muscle may be damaged to the point that the muscle starts to die.
In the individuals who are extremely out of shape, if multiple muscles are exercised too hard and too fast, then as the muscles die, they release proteins into the bloodstream, which can shut down the kidneys.
So it is generally recommended that individuals start an exercise program slowly and built up gradually.
In well-known sports medicine centers, usually experts recommend that, whatever amount of exercise athlete can do, cut it by one-third the first few times to prevent this problem with their muscles.
It is highly recommended for the high school athlete and high-level weekend warriors to maintain hydration, and follow up with slow start and report their aches and pains to the appropriate medical professionals within first 24 to 48 hours of their injuries.
There's a saying that nothing is sure, but death and taxes. When it comes to the world of sports, however, there are many who would also add injuries to that list.
While no amount of planning and preparation can completely eliminate the chance of injury, there are still a number of precautions an athlete can take to minimize the risk of getting hurt.
``To avoid a seemingly minor injury from turning into a potential season ending one, the athlete should visit a sports medicine physician, athletic trainer, or physical therapist to have the injury evaluated,'' says Dr. Michael Wiggins, of Foundry Sports Medicine & Fitness. ``Overuse injuries are very common and if treated rapidly and appropriately then these injuries can be corrected and allow the athlete to return to play. Failing to treat the injury or continuing to play when a brief period of rest would be beneficial can result in the progression of an injury.''

Kai Aboulian's Tips for Preventing Injury
Avoid bending knees past 90 degrees when doing half knee bends.
Avoid twisting knees by keeping feet as flat as possible during stretches.
When jumping, land with your knees bent.
Do warm up exercises not just before vigorous activities like running, but also before less vigorous ones such as golf.
Do not overdo it.
Do warm up stretches before activity. Stretch the Achilles tendon, hamstring and
quadriceps areas. Hold the positions. Don’t bounce.
Cool down following vigorous sports. For example, after a race, walk or walk/jog for
five minutes so your pulse comes down gradually.
Wear properly fitting shoes that provide shock absorption and stability.
Use the softest exercise surface available, and avoid running on hard surfaces like asphalt and concrete. Run on flat surfaces. Running uphill may increase the stress on the Achilles tendon and leg itself.

Although Cranston West has lost a solid leader and performer in now-graduated three-time first-team All-Stater Erin Lagasse, the Falcons still boast the second-fastest returning finisher from last year's State Championships in Nicole Cocozza.
She has already made two appearances on the All-State first team after twice placing third at the state meet and last year finishing as the top Rhode Island performer at the New England High School Cross Country Championships.
Cocozza has gotten her third season off to a great start, winning the Caswell Varsity One Race at the R.I. Interscholastic League's Girls Cross Country Carnival, Wednesday at Goddard Park, with a time of 19:41.
Cranston West coach Sheila Lagasse's squad also has the benefit of two other talented juniors in Haley Mathewson and Cassie Clarke, who placed third (20:21) and fourth (20:22), respectively, at this week's Injury Fund meet.
``They are fit and have some fresh young talent to help round out the team,'' Lagasse said of her outlook for the Falcons' season. ``I am not big on expecatations, rather the girls train hard and let the outcome speak for itself. As long as the preparation has been done, I can ask nothing more from the girls than their best effort.''
Kathryn Lynch got her high school career off to a splendid start, winning the Freshman Race of the R.I. Interscholastic League Girls Injury Fund Cross Country Carnival, Wednesday at Goddard Park.
The rookie covered the 2.55-mile course in 16 minutes, 24 seconds, for an 18-second margin of victory over Bay View freshman Stephanie Beaudette.
