NK takes top R.I. team honors; Griffin, Mack top R.I. boy and girl at NE XC Championships
Less than a week after completing a rare sweep of both the boys and girls’ state titles, the North Kingstown cross country teams proved they are also among the best in the region, at the 72nd annual New England Interscholastic Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country Championships, held yesterday at Ponaganset High School.
Though unable to run as a pack the way it did so successfully en route to its seventh-straight Class A championship and its sixth state crown in seven years, the girls’ squad still came away with an impressive runner-up finish to Hanover (N.H.) High School, which boasted the individual champion in junior Georgia Griffin (18:31).
As she did at the state meet, also held on the 5,000-meter Covered Bridge Trail, Allie Stasiuk led the Skippers, placing 19th in 19:18.
And once again paced by state runner-up Brandon Burns (38th in 16:42), the Skipper boys _ who last Sunday upset defending state champion Hendricken to win their first state crown in 16 years _ secured eighth place for the best finish by a Rhode Island boys’ team.
The La Salle girls, meanwhile, put the finishing touches on the best season in its program’s history, as the Rams placed fourth as a team and produced the top two Rhode Island finishers.
La Salle junior and Class A champion Jeanne Mack took fourth in 18:42, while Rams sophomore and reigning state champ Jean Christensen followed 17 seconds later in 11th place.
Barrington sophomore Sid Griffin was the top Rhode Islander (24th in 16:22) in the boys’ race, which was won by Connecticut state champ Donald Cabral of Glastonbury High School in 15:29.
Next from the Ocean State was Coventry senior Andrew Johnson, who was 33rd in 16:38.
R.I. state champ Andrew Palumbo of Hendricken _ whose squad fell victim to a pileup on a tricky turn near the start of the race and finished 14th _ placed 11th among Rhode Islanders, 75th overall, in 17:03.
Connecticut boys state champion Danbury High School edged Glastonbury for top team honors.
