Hope boys relay sets state record at Eastern States
A record-setting boys track result to report, courtesy of former Journal sports writer Bob Leddy:
The Hope High boys’ 4x200-meter relay team placed first, and set a new Rhode Island record for the event Tuesday at the Eastern States Track Championships at the Armory Track & Field Center, New York City. The foursome of Matt Washington, Winston Smith, Kevin Morgan and Joao Moreno clocked 1 minute, 29.72 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 1:30.91, which was set by the same Blue Wave quartet at the Yale Invitational meet in January.

The individuals on the Hope High track and field team are among the most talented on the east coast themselves. They came into the Rhode Island Indoor state track meet with just 6 individuals who also ran on both of the relay squads that placed high, including this potent 4X200m relay team which won the state championship and the 4X400m relay team who ran a strong second place.
The Hope High track team is very special. With just six athletes, the Blue Wave nearly stole the state championship away from the Hendricken Hawks who always seem to bring an army to the state meet. Hope lost by just 6 points. Hendricken makes it impossible for anyone to qualify individually from other schools because of their depth in the distance categories. Make no mistake about it, the sprints this year was all Hope, and it's a tribute to how hard they work. Imagine if Hope had one distance ace, just one. That could've been the difference even though Hendricken brings about 25-30 guys to the state meet every year.
This 4X200m relay team consists of the names we've seen in the RI sprinting team for a few years now. The addition of Matt Washington from Mount Pleasant nearly unstoppable in the relays. Kevin Morgan has been 2nd best in the state for a long time, and he's starting to take over. Winston Smith is a consistent sprinter who can run anywhere from 100-800 meters. Joao Moreno was runner up in the 800 outdoors as a freshman, and runner up in the 400 as a sophomore. He is a tremendous talent who can also run the 1500 if needed. This is one of the more potent teams around, and their recent performances of breaking the state record and winning the Eastern States competition is a feel good story for track and high school sports in our state.
