East Greenwich boys outdoor track coach Paul Evasick writes in to report that his Avengers defeated both Westerly and Prout in yesterday's dual meet.
They posted scores of - EG 91, Westerly 49 and EG 117, Prout 21- on the strength of ``Two outstanding performances by a pair of junior Captains: Wes Evasick winning all four events he was in - 4x100 relay, 110High Hurdles in 16.5, 300 Intermediate hurdles in 45.2 and the 4x400 Relay. Alex Iwamoto winning all four of his events; the 100 meters in 11.7, Triple Jump (with a leap of) 38-10, High Jump (with a jump of) 5-4 and Long Jump (at) 18-5.''
In last week's News & Notes, USA Track & Field passed along this story about a group of heroic high school athletes, first reported by the Associated Press:
Four athletes ran from a high school track and field meet Thursday to successfully rescue an elderly woman from a burning home in West Philadelphia, according to the Associated Press.
Across the street from the competition between West Philadelphia and Germantown High black smoke was seen rising from a house by several shot putters, who hopped a fence and ran to the scene. Germantown team member Dwyne Hall says the athletes heard a woman yelling for help when they got to the house and found her on the first floor. She was trying to go upstairs to find her kittens. He says three athletes from Germantown and one from West Philadelphia talked her out of it and guided her outside.
Hall says the woman was wearing only undergarments, so one boy gave her his sweat pants and another his sweat shirt.

Another track report from Larry Byrne on Hope's plans for this weekend:
Hi all
In reviewing the entries for the NY Relays, I discovered that Hope HS has entered both Boys and Girls, no doubt in the 4x100m [they call it a 400m relay], as follows:
New York Relays - April 20-21, 2007 - Icahn Stadium, Randall's Island, NYC
Saturday, April 22 - Running Events
11:05 Varsity Girls 400 Meter Relay - Trials
11:30 Varsity Boys 400 Meter Relay - Trials
1:20 Varsity Girls 400 Meter Relay - Final [If they qualify]
1:25 Varsity Boys 400 Meter Relay – Final "
It may be somewhat early in the season, but both teams, given the competition, could easily surpass the current State Records for these events!
Since the "heat sheets" have yet to been published, I don't have a clue as to who they're up against. If I obtain this info shortly, I'll pass same along...as well as if the Hope squads are competing in any other event [4x400?].

Another update from Larry Byrne on the upcoming Penn Relays:
Hi all
The Penn Relays Office announced this morning the HS teams that have been selected for the Boys and Girls 4x800m [sections] and the "one-race" championship DMR relay.
Among the 15 teams selected for the prestigious HS Girls Distance Medley Relay to be held at 6:20 p.m. on Thursday, April 26th is our own LA SALLE ACADEMY of Providence, as the complete listing below indicates...
A Bay Shore / NY (#1 2007 US Indoor Ranking)
B Southern Regional / NJ (#3)
C Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake / NY (#4)
D La Salle Academy / RI (#5)
E Carmel / NY (#7)
F Ramapo / NJ (currently ranked #4 in this '07 Outdoor Season)
G Roxbury / NJ
H Holy Names / NY
I Vere Technical / JA
J Walt Whitman / MD
K Pearl River / NY
L Manchester / JA
M Henderson / PA
N Radnor / PA
O Archbishop Prendergast / PA
Since Penn prohibits any HS from competing in both 4x800m and DMR, teams that are highly ranked in both, have to declare their choice before the races are selected. In this regard, Eleanor Roosevelt, Greenbelt, MD [#2 Indoor DMR] and Colts Neck, NJ [#6 Indoor DMR] opted for the 4x800m, while the #1 Indoor 4x800m team ... Carmel of New York choose to compete in the DMR Otherwise the top-ranked teams remained with the relay events in which they are stronger.
The two other HS relay events on the Penn program...4x100m and 4x400m...are open to all who enter same. However, who's running in what heat or section should be announced in another few days, and when they're selected, we'll pass that data along.

Longtime high school track aficionado Larry Byrne provides this update on local athletes who have been accepted to compete at the upcoming Penn Relays:
Hi all
The Penn Relays Office announced today those HS athletes accepted for the individual events during their three-day "Carnival" - April 26-28 in Philadelphia, Pa.
Only two RI entries were selected...Andrew Palumbo, Bishop Hendricken as one of 20 in the Boys Mile..while Jacob Keeling, Ponaganset made the 22-man field in the Javelin Throw.
Palumbo is the second consecutive "Hawk" chosen for this Mile field, as Tom Webb finished 8th in the 2006 event in 4:17.15.
This year's field has top milers from 11 states [MD, PA, WI, CO, UT, CA, OH, NY, DE, VA, and RI] and three from outside the US [Jamaica, Canada and Trinidad].
Among others chosen for this elite group...the 2006 champ [@ 4:13.82], Dominic DellaPelle of Salesianum, Wilmington, DE, back to defend...along with the 2007 #1 Indoor miler, Matt Centrowitz, Broadneck, Annapolis, MD [@ 4:08.76], who is dropping down from winning the 3000m at Penn last year.
Also included are Charles White of Cherry Creek, CO, who was 2nd in last Saturday's Arcadia [CA] Mile [@ 4:10.04]...and the Arcadia Two Mile winner [@ 9:00.51] Luke Puskedra, Judge Memorial, Salt Lake City, believed to be the first Utah HS athlete to compete at Penn.
Since the Javelin Throw is strictly an Outdoor event [Deo Gratis], the season is much too early to know what Jacob's competitors have done so far...but suffice to note that the top seed is a kid from "far away" British Columbia, Canada, and I gather that he's not coming some 3,000 miles not to take home a Penn Relays wristwatch.
As soon as the DMR and 4x800m elite fields are announced, I will pass this info along to all interested parties. The other two relay events....the 4x100m and 4x400m...are "open" to all who enter them.
Larry
I read your article on the Injury Fund. I did not realize that RI is the only state that has one. My family was helped by the Injury Fund. Last year my son broke his wrist in a high school baseball game. I would like to say thank you to Mr. Dwyer for his help and wish him good luck in his "retirement". Please pass this on to him.
Mary Piccolo
Needing to complete a ``capstone project’’ as part of her graduation requirements at Coventry High School, junior Erin Silva decided to organize an Injury Fund softball tournament, which will be held tomorrow beginning at 8:30 a.m. with 12 teams participating.
``A lot of kids use the job fair or career shadowing for their project,’’ said Silva, who plays both softball and volleyball at Coventry. ``But I saw this as really benefiting the community. I’ve been playing a lot of years, and I’ve seen a lot of unfortunate things happen. And medical bills can cost so much money.’’
The Providence Journal and projo.com present our winter All-State selections on Friday, April 13. More than 80 first-team All-State selections in 10 sports will be profiled, while second-team and coaches association All-Division selections will be listed.
