Tiverton's Conway wins state golf title

CRANSTON - Tiverton's Ben Conway overcame a two-stroke deficit over the final two holes as he captured the individual title in the R.I. Interscholastic League golf championships today with a even-par 71 in the second round of the 36-hole tournament at the Cranston Country Club.

Yesterday's performance gave Conway a 36-hole total of 147 and a two-stroke margin of victory over Barrington's Matt Osman. Conway had trailed Osman by two strokes going on the 17th hole, but the Tiverton senior birdied both the 17th and 18th while Osman double-bogeyed the 18th.

North Kingstown fast-pitch claims Division I Jayvee title

North Kingstown captured the Division I crown of the Javyee Fast-pitch Tournament last Monday at Winslow Park in Apponaug.

"In the State Championship Game, a superb pitching performance was turned in by North Kingstown's Emily Branch, who pitched a complete game shutout, scattering five hits while striking out six," reports Skippers jayvee coach Adam Laliberte. "North Kingstown received offensive contributions from Laura Gilli (2 triples, 4 RBI), Emily King (3 hits) and Murphy Nield (3 hits) to lead the team which had 17 hits in the final."

North Kingstown first had to get by Cumberland in the semifinal round, defeating the Clippers, 8-5, in eight innings.

Trailing Cumberland, 5-2, North Kingstown tied the score to send the game into extra innings. With the international tie breaker rule in effect, the Skippers then scored three runs in the top of the eighth. North Kingstown pitcher Kelly Stevens took it from there, finishing with 10 strikeouts in the complete-game effort.

Laliberte adds: "North Kingstown also received key offensive contributions from Emily Branch (3 hits), Michelle Marguette and Staci Mooney (2 hits each) and Samantha Croteau, who had the go-ahead RBI in the top of the 8th inning.''

West Warwick captures Division II Javyee fast-pitch crown

Freshman leadoff hitter and second baseman Logan Landroche hit an RBI triple, scored three times and stole a base in leading West Warwick to the Division II Jayvee Fast-pitch Championship with an 8-3 victory over Johnston in the title game, played last Friday at Mazzulla Field.

Holding a slim 4-2 lead going into the seventh, the Wizards put four more runs on the board in that frame, capitalizing on a walk, two errors, a double by Carissa McKendall and a single by Tori LaFond.

The Panthers got one run back in the bottom half of the inning when Jessica Carroll reached on a walk and went on to score. But West Warwick righthander Kayla Kiers kept Johnston from getting any closer, tossing a four-hitter and striking out 13.

Barrington's DiMario takes medalist honors in Individual State Golf Championship

Although not one of the five players helping Barrington recapture the Rhode Island Interscholastic League State Team Golf Championship yesterday at Cranston Country Club, Jacob DiMario still turned in a notable performance, taking medalist honors in the first round of the Individual State Championship.

Jacob DiMario

“I went out there trying to swing really easy on every shot, just hit fairways and hit greens, and that’s what I did,” said the sophomore, who took the lead in the race for the individual crown after firing a 1-over-par 72. “I bogeyed the first hole and then a couple holes later, putts started falling, and that’s just what did it. I just swung solid all day.”

Mt. Hope fast-pitch making turnaround thanks to Moreira

The Mt. Hope fast-pitch softball team has been enjoying more success of late, and sophomore pitcher Ashley Moreira has had more than a little to do with that, says coach Fred Da Silva: ``I have a pretty special pitcher in Ashley Moreira. She is only a sophomore and has been my starting pitcher since she came in as a freshman. Her stats include a 10-8 record on a team that only managed to win a handful of games the previous three seasons. She throws in the upper 50's consistently, has an ERA of 3.75, has given up only 97 hits in 104.2 innings with 39 walks and 125 strikeouts."

Evasick leads East Greenwich boys track to strong second-place finish at Class D Championships

East Greenwich boys track coach Paul Evasick provides this report of his team's strong showing at the Class D Championships behind junior captain Wes Evasick's triple win:

The EGHS boys track team had a great day on Saturday at the Class D Championships at Conley Stadium in Providence. The team scored 151 points on its way to a second-place finish overall behind Class D track powerhouse Classical (196 points). The Avengers surpassed their other Class D rival Rogers for the first time in 11 years, as the Vikings finished the day with 90 points.

Junior captain Wes Evasick had the big day as he won Triple Gold medals. He easily won the 110 High hurdles with a time of 16.2 seconds. He followed that performance up an hour later with his personal best time ever of 43.7 seconds in the 300 Intermediate hurdles to easily out pace second place Glenn Marcotte of Burrillville 45.3 seconds. Wes then capped off his day as the second leg of the gold medal 4x400 relay team. “ This was the first triple Class D state champion I’ve had in my 7 years of coaching the boys team. I have had some excellent athletes over the past few years but none had results as impressive as Wes had today!! He has put the work in all Year, yes it starts a year out, and it paid of today in GOLD.”

Sophomore Mark Feigan also had a big day, as he captured the gold medal in his speciality the 800 meter run, took a silver medal in the 1500 meter run earlier in the day and ran the third leg of the gold medal winning 4x400 relay. Mark ran a personal best, 2:04.2 in the 800, ran 4:23.4 in the 1500 and had a 56.5 second leg on the 4X400. “Mark really ran well today. He had to run a lot harder then he thought he would in the 800 to win his title. Ethan Leary of Rogers was primed and ready to take Mark down. Ethan grabbed the lead from Mark with 300 Meters to go, which I think shocked Mark, but Mark has one hell of a last 200 meters. Mark kicked it in at the 200 mark and won by 1.5 seconds. It was a very exciting race to watch.”

Freshman Nick Ross also garnered double medals as he became the Class D state champ in the 1500 meter run 4:20.7and followed that up with a second place in the 3000, 9:23.9. “This is becoming common place to watch Nick dominate the distance events for EGHS. He is a very talented young runner who improves weekly as his confidence grows.”

Others having good days were junior Mike Pezzullo Gold medal in the 3000 in a personal best time of 9:23.5 and he anchored the gold medal 4X800 relay and made up a 10 second deficit to capture that gold for the team. Junior Captian Matt Colavita help EG complete a sweep of the 3000 by capturing the Bronze medal in a personal best 9:25.0 and he was also on the gold medal 4X800 relay. Junior Andrew Glod had a strong day as he put up a personal best time by a second in the 400 meter dash to capture the silver medal in a state qualifying time of 53.1 seconds.”Andrew has been chasing that magic mark of sub 54 in the 400 for two seasons. It was great to see him shatter that today and win the silver medal.” Andrew also anchored the Gold medal 4X400 relay. Juniors Ben Drumm and Mark Regini came up big in the Discus as the finished 2,3 in the competition. Ben threw 131-11 and Mark threw his personal best 122-8 and qualified for the State meet on June 2. Junior Tom Davis took third in the hammer throw. “tom had an off day as he threw 20 feet less then his average, but he was able to do enough to hang onto the bronze medal. Junior Praveen Murthy and Freshman Austin Schaefer were the other members of the gold medal 4X800 relay. Senior Travis Brown, who has been competing injured much of the season, ran one of his better legs of the 400 this season to help the 4X400 relay capture the Gold for the third consecutive year at the class meet.

East Greenwich dominated the distance events as they sweep the 1500, 3000, took first in the 800 and won the 4x800 relay. Wes and Andrew did great in the sprint events.

“We need to add some depth in the field events, both jumps and throws and next year we may be the team to beat. It will be very tough to catch and pass Classical but we also thought it was impossible to outscore Rogers HS the past 11 years and we accomplished that today.”

Lincoln boys track captures first ever Class C crown

To the best of longtime coach John Menna's recollection, the Lincoln boys track team's Class C Championship this weekend represents the Lions' first outdoor class title in the history of their program.

Some highlights from that victory:

Aaron Sabatino was a triple winner, as he captured the long jump with a leap of 20' 11'', the 20-meter dash in 22.1 seconds and was part of Lincoln's first-place 4x100m relay team that broke the Lincoln High School record with a time of 44.9.

Sam Carlson won his first varsity race and became a class champion in the process when he clocked a winning time of 52.6 in the 400 meters.

Avenger boys track showing promise

East Greenwich boys outdoor track coach Paul Evasick provides this report on the Avengers' great showing at their first invitational of the season:

The Rick Schomp Invitational is an elite invitational for the top 18 athletes in each event for boys and girls. The boys team posted 40 points and placed fourth overall for the day out of 26 teams. The Avengers missed taking home the small division team trophy by 2 points to Westerly.

Several kids had big days with Freshmen Nick Ross leading the way. Nick grabbed everyone’s attention in the 1500 meter run as he improved his personal best time by 15 seconds and posted an automatic state championship qualifying time of 4:10.1. He finished third in a veteran field of runners. Only Andrew Springer of Westerly 4:04.0, and James Sylvestre of Lincoln 4:07.0 finished ahead of Nick. “Nick’s time for any athlete is impressive! But for a freshman it was an incredible day! Nick still is just learning how to run, and should be a formidable opponent for many years to come.”

Junior captain Alex Iwamoto also had a solid day as he garnered three medals on the day. He grabbed his first medal as he anchored the third-place 4X100 relay as they turned in a season best time of 46.1 seconds. He was helped by sopomore Mike Swartz, senior Paul Traficante, and junior Chris Walsh. Alex followed that up by posting a season best 11.5 in the 100 meter dash good for a fifth place finish. Alex capped off his day with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 38-4. All marks were good enough for provisional qualifying to the State meet in June.

Junior captain Wes Evasick hurdled his way back to the top of the state posting an automatic State qualifying time of 15.6 in the 110 Hurdles good for a third-place medal overall. “Wes ran two great heats today, qualifying he set a personal best time of 15.9 which was .5 seconds faster then his previous best and then followed that up in the finals with another PR of 15.6 seconds. Wes is also just getting on track and his times should improve throughout May.”

Sophomore Mark Feigan also ran a personal best in the 800 2:04.3 good for a third-place medal. Junior Ben Drumm finished third with a throw of 128-1 in the discus and fellow weight man junior Tom Davis took fourth in the Hammer 185-7.

"The team really has some special athletes,'' Paul Evasick says. "We are still probably a year away from making some real noise on the state level."

East Greenwich will compete in the Classical Classic on Saturday.
