Hope soccer, SK's Carr and Hendricken among honorees at inaugural Cox R.I. Sports Awards
The Hope soccer team, South Kingstown tennis coach Andy Carr and Bishop Hendricken were among those honored at the inaugural Cox Rhode Island Sports Awards, last Thursday at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

Over 100 of Rhode Island’s top scholar-athletes, Boston Celtic and former Providence College All-American Ryan Gomes and Big East Commissioner Michael Tranghese were among those honored last night at the first annual Cox Rhode Island Sports Awards presented by Amica. The event was held last night at the Providence Performing Arts Center. Cox Sports Television (www.cox-sports.com) recognized the Ocean State’s best high school scholar-athletes from each sport for every season at the event and will broadcast a highlight show of the Rhode Island Sports Awards on June 24 at 7 p.m.

In addition to showcasing the state’s best scholar-athletes from Woonsocket to Westerly, the top college athletes were honored. Providence College basketball standout Herbert Hill and Rhode Island College softball star Nicole Riley were recognized as the Ocean State’s Male and Female College Athletes of the Year, respectively.
The evening also featured the presentation of the Breakthrough Athlete of the Year to Boston Celtic and former Providence College All-American Ryan Gomes and the Vanguard Award to BIG EAST Commissioner Mike Tranghese. Boston Celtics President Richard Gotham and BIG EAST founder Dave Gavitt presented those awards to the award winners..
Rounding out the Cox RI Sports Awards was the announcement of the Rhode Island High School Team of the Year, Coach of the Year and School of the Year. The winners were:

The Female and Male Scholar Athletes of the Year highlighted the end of the show; Stephanie Morse from Warwick Vets and Winston Smith from Hope were honored as the 2007 Scholar Athletes of the Year and awarded a scholarship.
