In Their Own Words audio: La Salle soccer coach Pereira on rankings and tie

Listen to La Salle soccer coach Mario Pereira give Journal sports writer Carolyn Thornton his take on the Rams' placement in the national and regional rankings.

Listen to La Salle soccer coach Mario Pereira talk to Journal sports writer Carolyn Thornton about his team's 1-1 tie with North Kingstown.

Last week, the La Salle boys soccer team was ranked fifth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's national high school rankings and first in the Region I poll.

After suffering back-to-back losses to Chariho and South Kingstown - which incidentally was the first time a La Salle team has lost two in a row, coach Mario Pereira estimates, in about eight years - the Rams disappeared from the latest national rankings, released on Tuesday and dropped to eighth in the regional rankings.

On the strength of its 8-0-1 start, North Kingstown, meanwhile, climbed into the 25th spot in the national poll and jumped four spots, from seventh to third, in the regional rankings.

Following his team's 1-1 tie with the Skippers tonight at North Kingstown, Pereira gave his take on his team's place in the rankings: ``I think what people don't understand is all these rankings and all these things that's happened to La Salle over the last month or so, I think it's all from tradition,'' said Pereira, whose club won six-straight Division I State Championships before Mt. Hope ended the streak by defeating the Rams in last year's semifinal round. ``I mean, they have to put someone on them, and the fact that we got off to a really good start, it's flattering and we're very happy about it, but it's something that we all recognize as not being really realistic.''

Cox Sports Television's Fall Varsity Zone schedule underway

Cox Sports Television has kicked off its second season of Fall Varsity Zone, which airs on select Sundays at 7 p.m. The 2007 fall season, which kicked off on Sept. 23 with coverage of the high school football matchup between Narragansett and Johnston, will include coverage of Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division I Championships in boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer and football. Game coverage includes the Sleepy's Players of the Game, athlete profiles and a salute to the host school. The Players of the Game also are featured on the Cox Sports Television website (www.cox-sports.com).

Matt Russo, who scored three touchdowns and ran for more than 130 yards in Johnston's 40-7 win over Narragansett, was named the Cox Sports Television/Varsity Zone Player of the Game for the Panthers. Narragansett senior punter Bill Horan was named the VZ Player of the Game for the Mariners.

On yesterday's program, which featured the boys' soccer matchup between Cranston West and North Providence, Thomas Durigan was named the VZ Player of the Game for Cranston West after helping the Falcons to a 3-2 victory with his two goals.

Nick Corsi, who brought his season goal total to 11 after recording both North Providence tallies in that game, was named the Cougars' VZ Player of the Game.

“Cox Sports TV continues to provide a great vehicle to highlight our athletes and teams throughout the state," Tom Mezzanote, executive director of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League said in a press release. “CST’s exclusive broadcasts of our local high school teams are a tremendous boost to our athletic programs here in Rhode Island.
