Cox Sports Television's Fall Varsity Zone schedule underway
Cox Sports Television has kicked off its second season of Fall Varsity Zone, which airs on select Sundays at 7 p.m. The 2007 fall season, which kicked off on Sept. 23 with coverage of the high school football matchup between Narragansett and Johnston, will include coverage of Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division I Championships in boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer and football. There will also be a special edition of Varsity Zone on Thanksgiving featuring a live broadcast of the East Providence versus La Salle football game.
Game coverage includes the Sleepy's Players of the Game, athlete profiles and a salute to the host school. The Players of the Game also are featured on the Cox Sports Television website (www.cox-sports.com).
Matt Russo, who scored three touchdowns and ran for more than 130 yards in Johnston's 40-7 win over Narragansett, was named the Cox Sports Television/Varsity Zone Player of the Game for the Panthers. Narragansett senior punter Bill Horan was named the VZ Player of the Game for the Mariners.
On yesterday's program, which featured the boys' soccer matchup between Cranston West and North Providence, Thomas Durigan was named the VZ Player of the Game for Cranston West after helping the Falcons to a 3-2 victory with his two goals.
Nick Corsi, who brought his season goal total to 11 after recording both North Providence tallies in that game, was named the Cougars' VZ Player of the Game.
“Cox Sports TV continues to provide a great vehicle to highlight our athletes and teams throughout the state," Tom Mezzanote, executive director of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League said in a press release. “CST’s exclusive broadcasts of our local high school teams are a tremendous boost to our athletic programs here in Rhode Island. High School Sports is the purest form of sport.''
