Catching up with a report from East Greenwich assistant boys indoor track coach Paul Evasick on the Avengers' win over Toll Gate last Friday:
EGHS 71 vs TG 24 EGHS 4-1 overall
Hurdler establishes New school record
Friday night the avengers moved to 4-1 on the indoor season easily outpacing TollGate HS. The Avengers have one more meet left to the regular season on Wednesday evening at CCRI Lincoln, West Warwick and Cranston West are the opponents.
The avengers continue to show their strength and depth this indoor season as they cruised to an easy victory over TG with several key athletes on the sidelines. The avengers still put up an impressive points total without the services of Junior captain Mark Feigen and Sophmore Nick Ross. Coach E, “it was good to see some of the kids that never get a chance to score in meet do that for us this evening, athletes like Senior Gabe Hayek 3rd in the 3000M, Sophomore Austin Schaefer 3rd in 1000M.”
Three athletes that had big nights were Senior captain Wes Evasick, Senior (outdoor captain) Mark Regini and Senior captain Andrew Glod. Wes broke his own record he established last year in the 45 hurdles and lowered his time by another .10th He took first place in 6.7 seconds. Mark threw the shot put 5 feet better then his current PR and took 2nd place with a throw of 42’-9”. Andrew laid down an impressive 600M run to take home first place 1:28.4 almost a full second better then his previous best which vaulted him into the number 1 seed in the state in that event.
Coach E. “ Mark’s throw really opens up some possibilities for us going into championship season, anything over 42’ puts us consistently on the scoreboard, if he gets to 45’ he will be able to compete form a top six spot at States and a chance to go to New England’s. It was great to see that production out of Mark tonight, coach Mark Davis has been doing a great job with all the weightmen this season and some results are starting to show.” “Wes has been working hard all season to get ready for his championship season run. He really wants to compete for the state title and has been narrowing the gap between himself and the top hurdler in the state Kevin Alexander of NK. Wes still has a ways to go but every night like this where he improves he builds his confidence and rededicates himself to the chase.” “Andrew has been on a mission since last season to be the number 1 600M guy in this state, it looks like he has the right attitude and work ethic to make it happen this season.”
The rest of the team did their usual, Tom Davis 1st in weight throw 58-3, Alex Iwamoto 1st in High jump 5-8, Harrison Saunders 1st in 45 dash 5.8 and 2nd in 300M 40.9, Mike Pezzullo two first in the 3000M and the 1000M 9:25.2 and 2:56.1 respectively. Akash Chougule 1st in the 1500M 4:29.2. The 4X1 relay also took first with a season best time of 1:12.8, Iwamoto, Saunders, Schoettler, Baker.
The team is in action again in a make up meet Wednesday night against WW, CW. We will be resting many of our stars as we get ready for the Suburban Division championships this coming Saturday at CCRI Lincoln.
Rhode Island High School Basketball Officials will be participating in the national “Blow The Whistle on Cancer” campaign during the week of January 27th.
In cooperation with the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society, boy’s and girl’s officials are contributing a portion of their game fees as part of the Coaches vs Cancer crusade.
As a display of their commitment to the campaign, officials will be using pink or blue whistles in all varsity games played during that week.
The American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches initiated the nationwide effort in 1993, to unite coaches across the country for this worthy cause.
Today more than 500 coaches are involved, along with high school and college referees. Coaches vs Cancer has raised nearly $40 million since its’ inception.
Sincerely,
Mike Swistak for RI Boys’ and Girl’s Referee Associations
The La Salle girls' indoor 4x400 relay team of Lily Kessinger, Alyssa Limperis, Christina Marcaccio and Lauren Cardarelli placed first among 37 high schools with a winning time of 4:03:19 at last Sunday's McIntyre Elite Relays in Boston.
Limperis, Marcaccio and Cardarelli then teamed up with Stefanie Raiola to place third in the 4x200 with a time of 1:47:54.

A report from Bob Leddy on Jeanne Mack's quest for an invitation to run at Millrose:
In her final attempt this season at qualifying for the prestigious Millrose High School mile, La Salle’s Jeanne Mack yesterday toed the line at the Yale Invitational mile at Coxe Cage with a game-plan fashioned by her coach.
Indeed, not only did the Ram senior adhere to that plan, but she made Rhode Island track history in the bargain, becoming the first Rhode Islander to qualify for the Millrose Girls’ Mile in that event’s 24-year history. (Four local boys have run Millrose: brothers Andrew and Neal Butler, of St. Raphael, in 1988 and ‘89; Hendricken’s Dave Murphy in 2003, and the Hawks’ Andrew Palumbo last year).
Yesterday, Mack placed second in 4 minutes, 54.86 seconds, a time good enough to earn her one of 10 coveted spots in the Millrose Mile, which will be held Feb. 1 at New York’s Madison Square Garden as part of the annual Millrose Games.
“It’s absolutely amazing,’’ said Ram coach Kelly Martin. “I’m so excited. And the plan was [final time of] 4:54.’’
In aiming for a Millrose berth (which is based on time), Mack clocked 5:04.84 at last month’s Brown Invitational mile, and shaved nearly eight seconds off that time at the subsequent Dartmouth Invitational (4:56.57). Yesterday, she was the picture of confidence. “She hit her splits perfectly,’’ Martin said of Mack, who went through the half-mile in 2:26.4. “She looked so confident. I saw the determination on her face.’’
Running off a California (two-tiered) start on Coxe’s four-lane banked oval, Mack got out into third place. “The plan was to take it easier the first 800 meters,’’ Martin said, “and to move out in the last 600 [meters].’’
At the bell lap, Mack - the state’s 1,000- and 1,500-meter indoor champion last year - was on the shoulder of eventual winner, Jillian King, of Scotia-Glenville High in New York. King finished in 4:53.84. Mack was a full three seconds ahead of the third-place finisher. As a side note, running on the Coxe Cage oval will aid Mack in adjusting to Madison Square Garden‘s four-lane banked oval.
“I’m so happy for her, I can’t tell you,’’ Martin said of the Harvard-bound Mack. “Jeanne got this through hard work and dedication. She does what she does for her team. This is a huge weight off her shoulders, and mine.’’
At the Yale boys’ mile yesterday, East Greenwich sophomore Nick Ross placed fifth in 4:22.59. Westerly’s Andrew Springer placed sixth in 4:23.56.

Relying on the strength of its relay teams, the La Salle girls indoor track team successfully defended its title at the Dartmouth Invitational, held this weekend at Hanover, N.H.
More details to come . . . . . .
A number of weekend high school track results, courtesy of Bob Leddy:
A Rhode Island record was broken, and one equaled, in track meets over the weekend. At the Rhody Invitational, held at URI, Classical senior Victoria Flowers bettered the girls’ indoor shot put mark that had stood for 12 years. Flowers put the ball a winning distance of 45 feet, one-half inch (13.73 meters), bettering the mark of 45 feet (13.71), set in 1996 by Emily Carlsten, of Warwick Veterans’ High.
At the Dartmouth Invitational in New Hampshire, Moses Brown junior Jenna Poggi tied the state record for the girls’ indoor pole vault. Poggi got off a winning vault of 11 feet, 6 inches (3.51), equaling that height set in 2001 by Toll Gate’s Nicole Battista.

East Greenwich boys indoor assistant coach Paul Evasick reports on the team's strong showing at the Dartmouth Relays:
Two Shine at Dartmouth Relays! Tom Davis, Mark Feigen
This past Saturday the Avengers competed at the Dartmouth relays. The meet attracts the best talent from the east coast in Track and Field. East had several athletes place in the top twenty and two that placed in the top 3.
Senior Tom Davis continued his climb to the top of the Nation’s rankings in the 25# weight throw. Tom was very consistent today as all his throws were over 57 feet and above, he uncorked a personal best throw of 61-5 on his second throw of the competition which held up for an overall third place finish. “ It’s pretty special for these kids to come to a big time meet such as Dartmouth and compete against kids from all over the Northeast and do well.” Especially in the weight throw, there are only a handfull of states that allow the weight throw, so all the best throwers are at a meet like Dartmouth.
Coach E “ Tom had a great day today, but he has more to give and achieve, he is improving each time out as his confidence grows and he believes in himself.” We have not seen his best yet.”
The other Avenger to have a big day was Junior Captain Mark Feigen , a first team All-State cross country runner, Mark ran a personal best 2:37.95 in the 1000M. That time was good for an overall 3rd place finish and a medal. Mark had a hard time getting out of the pack of runners at the start, the kids are so good and fast at a meet like this. Mark made a move on the second of 5 laps as he went to the front of the pack to give himself some clean space to run in. He never gave back the lead and finished strong with a great kick the last 100 meters to win his heat and take third place overall. “ Mark is such a strong runner and he has one of the best finishes in the state. He has several gears he can switch on and off when he needs them, he surprises a lot of competitors when he shifts into one of those gears!”
Others having very strong days were: Senior Captains Wes Evasick, Andrew Glod, Alex Iwamoto, Akash Chougule, all finished in the top twenty in very competitive fields.
Wes 8.48 in 55 hurdles, Andrew 1:28.95 600M, Alex 19-5 in Long Jump and Set the new Indoor School Record, and Akash 10:18.0 in the 2 mile. The 4X400 relay also had a good day as they finished 16th overall with a season best time of 3:43.8. Senior Mark Garlock, junior Mark Feigen, Senior Andrew Glod and Senior Chris Walsh.
The team travels to another regional meet next weekend at Yale University.
Former East Greenwich All-State basketball player Tori Ahrens has gotten her collegiate career off to a great start. The following appears on the Franklin Pierce women's basketball team web site:
Ahrens Named NE-10 Freshman of the Week
East Greenwich, R.I., native selected after helping 23rd-ranked Ravens topple defending National Champions
RINDGE, N.H. (January 7, 2008) – Franklin Pierce University freshman Tori Ahrens (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) was named Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Week for women’s basketball this afternoon.
Ahrens earns the award for the first time after she posted her first collegiate double-double in Franklin Pierce’s 83-64 victory at 10th-ranked and defending NCAA Division II National Champion Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday. She notched season-high totals with 13 points and ten rebounds (six offensive) to go with a blocked shot and steal in the Ravens lone game of the week. She hit 5-of-11 shots from the field and converted 3-4 free-throws in the contest.
Ahrens has seen action in each of Franklin Pierce’s first 13 games of the season, averaging a valuable 15.1 minutes per game off the bench. Her 3.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game is tops among Raven freshmen, with her rebounding average tied for second on the team overall, to go with eight blocked shots (2nd on the team). Ahrens is shooting 52.8-percent (19-for-36) from the field for the year.
Ahrens has led Franklin Pierce in rebounding in back-to-back games (establishing season-bests in both contests) and three times overall this season. She grabbed a team-best nine rebounds in the Ravens 70-59 win at Dominican College on December 30. Ahrens blocked a season-high three shots in a 79-70 win at Southern New Hampshire (12/12).
Ahrens is a 2007 graduate of East Greenwich High School in Rhode Island, where she was a four-year letterwinner - serving as captain as a junior and senior. She was a three-time All-State performer at East Greenwich, earning first team honors as a senior. She was a 1,000-point scorer over her career and was a member of a State Championship finalist as a sophomore.
Franklin Pierce (12-1, 7-1 NE-10), ranked 23rd in the most recent USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division II poll, is off to the best start in program history and returns to action tomorrow when it hosts preseason NE-10 favorites Bentley College (8-4, 5-3 NE-10), among teams receiving votes nationally, at 5:30 p.m.
A report on this week's meet from East Greenwich assistant coach Paul Evasick:
EGHS Boys Track Results:
East Greenwich 45 vs Bishop Hendricken 50
East Greenwich 84 vs Pilgrim 11
Avengers: 3 wins, 1 loss on the season
Exciting Early season meet!!!
East Greenwich and Bishop Hendricken boys Indoor Track staged a great early season meet. The meet was nip and tuck the whole way with the score tied 45-45 going into the 4X1 lap relay. Hendricken has not lost an Indoor meet in over 10 years. There were some nice surprises for the avengers and some disappointments.
Coach E-“It was a classic meet, the way a competition was meant to be. Both teams poured their hearts out and there were some great performances.”
Sophomore sensation Nick Ross continued his assault on the EG record books and all other RI runners who stand in his way. He opened up the meet with a surprisingly easy win over Bronson Venable( 20078 Cross-Counrty State Champ) in the 3000M. Nick put the hammer down with 6 laps to go and then coasted in to his second best time ever of 9:08.4 Nick followed that up with a first place and new school record in the 1000M later in the meet, 2:39.9 “ Nick is just an outstanding runner, as I have said all along, the scary part is we have not seen his best yet. He is better and stronger every time he steps on the track.”
The Avengers kept the momentum going in the next two events as Junior Harrison Saunders and Senior Captain Wes Evasick took home first places in the 45 dash and 45 hurdles respectively, 5.8 and 6.8 seconds. Junior Captain Mark Feigen put down a personal best in the 1500M and finished first in a time of 4:19.1. Senior captain Andrew Glod pulled off an unexpected first place with his season best time in the 600M 1:29.9.
The disappointments came as junior Harrison Saunders put up a personal best time of 39.7 in the 300 and then was disqualified for cutting in too soon. He lost a second place finish and Hendricken then swept all 9 points in the event. Tom Davis had a mix up in his timing of events and missed his flight of the Shot Put and thus again the avengers were swept in that event. Tom Davis however wound up throwing a personal best in the weight throw 59-11.75 a New School record and taking a suprising first place finish in that event. Coach E – “It was just a great meet all around, whichever team wound up losing can just play what-if scenarios for almost all the events. We happened to come up short, but had some better then expected performances and we get another crack at Hendricken at the division championships. I know these boys will be hungry again!”
Coach E- “ We knew the team needed to be ahead by more then 5 points going into the relay in order to pull out the win tonight, BH has just a tremendous 4X1 relay and we would not and did not match their time.” I think the kids are disappointed but we as coaches are truly happy with the great performances and knowing we are right there with Hendricken. We get another shot at them on February 2nd, and the results have the potential to be reversed. Don’t miss it, because we won’t!!!
EG is off to the Dartmouth and Yale relays the next few weekends and back in action in the RIIL against Toll Gate on Friday January 25th.

7 ATTRIBUTES OF THE COMPLETE BASKETBALL PLAYER
By Carmine J. Goneconte
The game of basketball is a wonderful team game. Unlike any other team game basketball allows each of the 5 players on the court to be interchangeable, meaning the “position” each person plays is basically the same as the other 4 positions on the court. Everyone on the team must be able to run, jump, defend, dribble and shoot to varying degrees. Most times the smaller, quicker players are at the guard positions and the taller, slower players are forwards or centers, but this is not always the case nowadays. It is not uncommon to see “big men” handling the ball and shooting 3 point shots and point guards “posting up” smaller defenders.
No matter which position a person plays, there are several attributes that will determine his/her ultimate level of play. Each one is important on its own, however several attributes added together dramatically increase the player’s potential for success. “Gifted athletes” possess most, if not all, of these attributes naturally. Most people possess some of the attributes and have to work hard to improve the areas where they are lacking. Some of the attributes are “God-given”, or naturally present in a person. Height is the most obvious example. You’re as tall as you’re going to be. There’s nothing you can do to improve your height! Foot speed, or quickness is another example of natural ability – you either have it or you don’t! It is understood that you can certainly improve upon your foot speed to some extent, but a slow-footed person cannot make him/herself into a speedster. Several of the other attributes listed below certainly can be improved upon with hard, diligent work. The attributes are:
HEIGHT: A basketball goal is positioned 10 feet above the floor, which by logic infers that taller players will have more success putting the ball in the goal than shorter players because they are closer to it!. The saying in basketball, “You can’t teach height” is certainly true. If all other elements are equal then the taller player will be more successful at the game than the shorter player. Unfortunately size (height) is the one requirement of the game of basketball that you cannot control or change.
SPEED: Without a doubt the most important physical attribute necessary to achieve success in basketball is speed, specifically foot speed or quickness. The ability to beat an opponent to a spot, offensively or defensively, will ultimately lead to success on the basketball court. Offensively if you are quicker than the person guarding you then they will either, 1) be beaten by you when they guard you closely, or 2) have to stay off you a step or two to compensate for your quickness. This will allow you to shoot open jump shots. Defensive quickness causes dribblers to move “east-to-west” across the floor instead of “north-to-south” to attack the basket because they cannot dribble by you. When a dribbler cannot get around a defender he/she is forced to dribble laterally, east-to-west! Off the ball defensive quickness creates stolen passes, offensive fouls, throw-away passes, etc. all because the quick defender can get to a spot faster than a slower offensive player.
STRENGTH: Basketball is a physically demanding sport and although it is not considered a “contact sport”, if you play in or watch a basketball game you will learn that that is not the case. Using the core muscles (lower back, abdominals, glutes, hamstrings& thighs) to defend an opponent, get position for a rebound or to elevate to the basket on a shot attempt is something a basketball player does constantly during a game. Stronger players can move weaker players out of desirable positions on the court. Conversely, stronger players cannot be moved away from a desirable spot on the floor by weaker players. A strong defender can easily “push” an opponent off the path he/she wants to take. A strong offensive player will not be denied the spot they want because they have the physical advantage over their opponent. Having strong hands, arms, shoulders and legs in addition to a strong core muscle group makes a basketball player more able to overpower an opponent in any situation. .
CONDITIONING: Basketball is an aerobic sport. High school games last 32 minutes and require a player to run hard in spurts for lengths of 60 to 80 feet. In addition to the sprinting there are many quick, lateral movements made during a game. Along with “sliding” side-to-side while on defense a basketball player must jump multiple times when rebounding. All of these actions require the player to be in excellent condition. When a player gets tired on the court it is quite noticeable to all. The reality is that you cannot play the game of basketball effectively if you are not in shape.
SKILLS: There are many skills that a basketball player needs to develop in order to be a good player. They all involve hand-eye coordination or foot coordination. The ability to dribble the ball with either hand WITHOUT looking at it is one of the more basic skills. The ability to step forward with either foot as a lead foot and thus use either foot as a pivot is also critical. Being able to pass the ball with either hand while stationary or while running or dribbling increases a player’s skill level. Last but not least is the ability to put the ball in the basket while being guarded and/or the ability to “create offense”. This is the most important, and thus, one of the most difficult skills to develop. It is not easy to put a large ball into an 18 inch diameter hoop 10 feet above the floor while no one is guarding you let alone when someone is working hard to stop you from putting the ball in the hoop!
EFFORT: The one attribute that is most controllable is Effort or Work Ethic, which is a combination of passion (enthusiasm) for the game and a willingness to put forth the effort necessary to become the best player your natural talents allow. These two subsets of Effort go hand-in-hand. You cannot have one without the other. If you truly love the game of basketball and have a desire to be the best player you can be then you will willingly and enthusiastically work on the four “improvable” elements listed above. Your passion to improve will drive your effort to improve. Conversely, if you are not willing to put in effort to improve your speed, skills, strength and conditioning it is probably due to the fact that you truly do not want to. You do not have the desire! Many players will say that they “love basketball” and “want to get better”, however their actions, or inactions clearly prove that they do not, or are not, willing to put forth the effort. The old adage, “Don’t tell me, show me” is apropos here.
BASKETBALL I.Q.: I use this term to describe a player’s knowledge of the game. Yes, most people who play, or played basketball know something about the basics of the game, however players with a high Basketball I.Q. know it on a different level. They see the game differently than most other people. For instance, offense to most players means scoring points. They know that putting the ball in the hoop counts for 1,2 or 3 points, therefore they practice shooting layups, foul shots and jump shots. As they play or watch a game they are only concerned with the end result of shooting, did the ball go in or did it miss? The shot might be mechanically flawed but as long as the ball goes in it’s fine. The player with the high I.Q. is obviously concerned with, and thus practices, shooting to score points however he/she also recognizes the value of moving to get open to score. In addition, players with a high Basketball I.Q. have great “court awareness”, which is an inherent sense of knowing what to do, where to go and where their teammates are without looking or thinking. These players do not concern themselves with the immediate play, but rather they anticipate their teammates’ and opponents’ next move while making the immediate play. In short they are thinking a step-or two ahead of everyone else on the floor. I believe this attribute is one that a player can develop over time by playing in games and practicing game-like situations, however not all players are capable of achieving the I.Q. necessary to play at the higher levels of the game.
There certainly are other sub-attributes or skills that a player needs to become a top-notch basketball player but I believe they all fit into one of the categories noted above. These 7 are, in my opinion the critical ones that a young person needs to have. Very few basketball players have all of these attributes. They are the ones playing in the NBA, WNBA or at the top Division I colleges. Many of the other Division I college-level players have varying degrees of each of these attributes.
This paper is intended to simply list the attributes that are necessary to becoming a better basketball player. Any player can make him/herself better by working on the attributes that are improvable, however it must be emphasized that a person is only going to be as good as their natural abilities allow. Many, if not most, children do not have enough of the attributes to play basketball at the high school level. Just think of all the kids who played in the local recreation league at 9 and 10 years old that no longer play. It is my opinion that there is too much pressure placed on children who do not have the attributes or desire to play competitive basketball! A child who likes to play basketball should be encouraged to play for the enjoyment of the game first. If the child wants to put in extra effort to become better then there are many training aides available to help them. For example there are many videos and books available to help a player improve his or her strength, speed, conditioning and basketball skills. Coaches are also a very good resource and are generally very willing to share their knowledge with interested young players. In fact a player can simply replicate the drills he/she does at basketball practice to get in a workout that will benefit him/her in many of the necessary areas. As long as the child has the desire to improve then he/she will willingly put in the effort to get better. How much better they will become is governed by their God-given natural ability.
To conclude, I hope this paper provides some insight into what it takes for a child to become a complete basketball player. As noted above I am sure that there will be some disagreement, or at least some suggested additions or deletions, with the attributes I listed and that’s fine. If this paper generates thought and discussion on the topic then I feel it has accomplished it’s goal.

Classical's Marilyn Batista had a game-high 12 points and was named to the All-Tourney team.
Championship Game
Central 43, Classical 42
What a great game!! It ended with fans running on the court.
Classical came out of the gate fast. Eight minutes into the game Classical led by 12. Tournament MVP Senior Capt. Margaret Mendez had three three-pointers in the last 7min. of the half to help close the gap and give Central the lead at halftime, 25-23.
The second half went back and forth with 5 lead changes. With under a minute to play Classical's senior point guard Christa-lee Lynch (16 pts, game high) hit a jumper to the right of the foul-line to put classical up 42-41.
After a miss on the other end, Central stopped Classical on the defensive end. With about 30 seconds to play, Central brought the ball up and Classical deflected the ball out of bounds. Central failed to inbound the ball and was called for 5 seconds. Central had to foul. We fouled Classical in front of their bench. That was only our 5th team foul. The clock was at 22 seconds. We still had to foul two more times (to get into) 1 and 1.
We knew we had to go to for a steal on the inbounds. We double-teamed Lynch on the in-bound pass. They tried to get Lynch the ball in the back court, but the in-bounder passed it too early and Lynch's momentum carried her into the backcourt for a violation.
We drew up a play for our point guard Janell Blyden (8 pts. all-tourney). She took a shot with 17 sec and missed. Mahogany Stephens got the rebound and missed the put-back. Blyden came up with the loose ball and was fouled in the process. With 8 sec remaining she went to the line for a 1-and-1. She made both to win the game, 43-42. Classical came down and missed in the final seconds.
Classical's Ashley Milan was also named to the all-tourney team.
``The tournament went great!'' said Scandura. ``The girls really enjoyed themselves. The tournament was such a success, we hope we can do it again next year!''
