What a great game!! It ended with fans running on the court.
Classical came out of the gate fast. Eight minutes into the game Classical led by 12. Tournament MVP Senior Capt. Margaret Mendez had three three-pointers in the last 7min. of the half to help close the gap and give Central the lead at halftime, 25-23.
The second half went back and forth with 5 lead changes. With under a minute to play Classical's senior point guard Christa-lee Lynch (16 pts, game high) hit a jumper to the right of the foul-line to put classical up 42-41.
After a miss on the other end, Central stopped Classical on the defensive end. With about 30 seconds to play, Central brought the ball up and Classical deflected the ball out of bounds. Central failed to inbound the ball and was called for 5 seconds. Central had to foul. We fouled Classical in front of their bench. That was only our 5th team foul. The clock was at 22 seconds. We still had to foul two more times (to get into) 1 and 1.
We knew we had to go to for a steal on the inbounds. We double-teamed Lynch on the in-bound pass. They tried to get Lynch the ball in the back court, but the in-bounder passed it too early and Lynch's momentum carried her into the backcourt for a violation.
We drew up a play for our point guard Janell Blyden (8 pts. all-tourney). She took a shot with 17 sec and missed. Mahogany Stephens got the rebound and missed the put-back. Blyden came up with the loose ball and was fouled in the process. With 8 sec remaining she went to the line for a 1-and-1. She made both to win the game, 43-42. Classical came down and missed in the final seconds.
Classical's Ashley Milan was also named to the all-tourney team.
``The tournament went great!'' said Scandura. ``The girls really enjoyed themselves. The tournament was such a success, we hope we can do it again next year!''
