EG boys indoor squad finishes regular season on a high note

Apologies for the belated posting . . . . .East Greenwich indoor assistant track coach Paul Evasick provides this recap of the Avengers' final regular-season meet with an eye toward this weekend's class meets:

EGHS 79 vs CW 16 EGHS 73 vs WW 22
Finish Regular season 6-1

The Avengers closed out the regular season with 2 wins over Cranston West and West Warwick Wednesday night (Jan. 30).

It was a big night for many of the Senior athletes on the team. East swept the Weight throw and the hurdles in route to the two wins. Senior Tom Davis led the weight throwers with another solid evening and a mark of 59-11, Sophomore Brandon Gomeau got of a season best throw of 43-11 to take second and Billy Higgins made the sweep complete with a throw of 35-10.

The hurdlers then lined up and had a great 1-2-3 finish with Senior captain Wes Evasick running a 6.6 and re-setting the school record again. Chris Walsh took home second with a season best time of 7.3 and Junior Mike Swartz took third in 7.4. Wes also turned around and took 1st in the 45 dash with a personal best time of 5.7 seconds.

Others having good nights were: Sophomore Nick Ross 1st place in 1000M 2:45.0, Senior Mark Garlock 1st in the 600M 1:36.0, Senior captain Akash Chougule 1st in 1500M in 4:26.6.

Coach E. “The team had a great regular season and now gets ready to compete as one of the top five teams in the state during the championship season. We have a very good shot at pushing Hendricken to the limit and if things break right for us, we can win the division championship, it is an outside chance because of Hendricken’s great depth.” The team will be locked in a big battle with Classical the following week as we try to win our first ever Class C Indoor Championship. I have us preliminarily edging out Classical by 2 points if all goes as scripted. It should be a very exciting Class C state meet.”
