NK's Emrich leads top 20 at inaugural Individual Cheerleading Championships
The top 20 cheerleaders were named at the inugural Rhode Island Interscholastic League Individual Competition Cheerleading Championships, held earlier tonight at Rhode Island College’s Murray Center. And at the very top of the list was North Kingstown senior captain Samantha Emrich.
Integrating a mix of cheers that she’s performed with the Skippers’ competition team and football cheerleading squads, along with a combination of dance and tumbling moves she came up with on her own, Emrich earned a total score of 101.5 out of a possible 120 points, receiving 47.5 out of a possible 55 points in cheer and jumps – the highest score of the night in that category.
Fifty-six cheerleaders representing 11 schools competed at the first-time event. Each performed a 1- to 2-minute routine that they had choreographed themselves before a panel of three judges, who were each responsible for evaluating the cheerleaders in one of three categories – dance, cheer and jumps and tumbling.
“I definitely wanted to include my tumbling skills because that’s one of my biggest strengths,’’ she said. ``And I also wanted to include a toe touch series, so I did three of those. And I wanted to include some fun, sharp dance moves.
``Now that (competition cheerleading) is interscholastic, I do feel much more pressure to set the bar and show that cheerleading actually is a competitive and athletic sport,’’ added Emrich, who was joined in the top 20 by sophomore teammate Hillary Stamps (87.5). ``So I really wanted to come out and give it my all and show what cheerleading’s about.’’
Brianna Archambault of West Warwick and Brittany Dickie of Mount St. Charles finished tied for the second-highest point total. Archambault posted the second-highest tumbling score (33), finished tied with Dickie for the second-highest score in cheer and jumps (46) and earned a 19 in dance, en route to her overall score of 98. Dickie, who helped lead Mount to the Small Division team championship on Sunday, earned the highest dance score of the night, receiving a 23 out of a possible 25 points.
Mount St. Charles, La Salle, Portsmouth and St. Raphael each had three cheerleaders placde in the top 20.

Inaugural RIIL Competition Cheerleading team title goes to La Salle
Chapter One of the history of Rhode Island Interscholastic Competition Cheerleading is now being written, and the first entry goes to La Salle Academy.
The Rams easily won the co-ed divisional state title, then went on to capture the overall state crown as well at the inaugural RIIL Team Competition Cheerleading Tournament, held yesterday at Johnson and Wales University’s packed Harborside Recreation Center.
With freshman flyer Jessica Lopes filling in for teammate Stephanie Russell, who broke her ankle three weeks ago, the Rams performed to a medley of 1980s hits, amassing a to a team score of 192 points out of a total possible score of 220.
Given that the Rams’ have male cheerleader Dylan Smith on their squad, La Salle must compete as a co-ed team and easily beat out Tiverton, the only other school competing in the RIIL as a co-ed squad, for that divisional championship.
La Salle then had to wait for the Small-, Medium- and Large-School Divisions to be contested to determine if they would remain the top point-getter of the day – and thus, the overall state champion.
Mount St. Charles captured the Small Division title, taking first in the seven-team field with a score of 176.
Despite losing 11 points because of penalties that involved two improper dismounts and a hair safety issue, Portsmouth still racked up enough points (178) to secure the Medium Division crown by a relatively large margin.
Performing to a mix of hip hop and rock punk, North Providence closed out the championships with an electric routine that earned the Cougars the Large Division crown, amassing 189.5 points even after being assessed a major penalty of five points because of an improper dismount.
In the end, though, North Providence didn’t accrue enough points to overtake La Salle for the overall state crown. Although the Cougars had a slight edge over the Rams in the pyramids, stunts and dance categories, La Salle earned 54 points for its gymnastics elements to North Providence’s 50. And that proved to be the difference.
Kingston -- Bishop Hendricken became only the second team in Interscholastic League history to win five consecutive Division I state titles with a thrilling 67-64 overtime victory over Woonsocket.
Guards Billy Baron (26 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals), Brendan Degnan (16 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds), and forward Kevin McCartney (12 points, 19 rebounds) led Hendricken's attack.
Michael LaPlante (18 points, 8 rebounds), Michael Akinrola (19 points, 13 rebounds), and Brett Coderre (15 points, 7 rebounds) were Woonsocket's top scorers.
SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Tournament MVP Monica Bharoocha scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds in helping La Salle successfully defend its Division I title with a 59-54 victory today over Bay View.
Torey Jones and Jameilia Dillon combined for 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Rams, who outrebounded the Bengals 47-38. Bay View was led by Brittany Wilson with 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Barrington wins Division II girls basketball state title
Kingston -- Barrington won its second consecutive Division II state title today by playing stellar defense, limiting Mount St. Charles to just 24.4 percent shooting from the field (10-for-41) in a 37-30 victory.
Senior guard Caitlyn Milazzo led Barrington with 16 points, 5 steals, and 4 rebounds. Nicole Turcotte led Mount St. Charles with 8 points and 11 rebounds.
