Connecticut hoops star Monteiro signs to play at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH (AP) - B.J. Monteiro, a 6-foot-5 swingman chosen as the Connecticut high school player of the year, signed a binding letter of intent Thursday with Duquesne University.

Monteiro, an excellent shooter and penetrator, is expected to compete immediately for playing time at Duquesne, which is losing guards Gary Tucker and Reggie Jackson to graduation.

Monteiro verbally committed to Duquesne following a campus visit in February and signed his letter of intent at a news conference at Crosby High School in Waterbury on Thursday. He also considered UNLV, Saint Joseph's, Penn State and Fordham.

"He's a very good offensive player that we've watched for a long time," Duquesne coach Ron Everhart said. "He's a good kid who comes from an excellent program and a player who will be able to help us immediately."

A former high school teammate of Duquesne forward Damian Saunders, Monteiro averaged 22 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals on Crosby's state Class LL championship team as a senior. He won several state player of the year awards, including that of the Hartford Courant.

Monteiro averaged 24 points as a sophomore on another state championship team in 2005-06, when Saunders was his teammate, and 25 points as a junior.

Bay View improves to 3-0 in DI fastpitch with 1-0 win over Westerly

Bay View survived its first big test of the season, edging Westerly, 1-0, in a Division I fast-pitch softball game today at Cimalore Field.

``It was a very well played game today, and both pitchers did a great job,'' said Bengals coach Dennis Kennedy.

Winning pitcher Marian Long scored the game-winner, leading off the fourth inning with a base hit. Fallon Scorpio sacrificed Kady Poland - the courtesy runner for Long - to second. Kelly Mitchell then hit a 3-and-2 pitch into shallow center for a base hit that scored Long.

Westerly threatened to score on a number of occasions, as the Bulldogs had runners on first and second with two outs in the first, on second with one out in the third, on third with two outs in the fourth and on first and second with one out in the fifth. But Long preserved the shutout, scattering five hits with seven strikeouts and one intentional walk.

Ali Burdick also had a strong outing for Westerly, giving up just four hits, while fanning six and walking three.

Fatima softball maintains ``great expectations"

Given that Fatima graduated five of its infielders, including the hard-throwing Cassie Conley and the hard-hitting Nicole Zima, and has a new coach at the helm, the Tigers certainly enter the new season with more than a few question marks. But rookie coach Lyndsey DeTroia doesn’t plan on lowering the bar set by last year’s team, which secured its second Division III championship in three years.

``We are rebuilding with great expectations for the entire team,’’ said the former Toll Gate standout, whose Tigers dropped their season opener to Central last week and fell to Hope on Tuesday. ``These girls have the ability, skill and attitude to play as hard as the girls did last year.’’

Senior Sara Morrison and Junior Meaghan Welford are sharing the pitching duties, with junior Kara Ramsey once again providing the target behind the plate. All three are coming off an exciting basketball campaign, having guided the Tigers to their first appearance in the Division III finals. Senior outfielders and co-captains Brittany Johnson and Alex Sullivan have been leading the team with great enthusiasm, as well, said DeTroia, who has been rotating players at various positions in search of the right combination.

``These past couple of weeks have been very positive, except for the weather,’’ she said. ``Every day I see improvement in each player. All work hard and are eager to play every day. I am proud to be working with such high energy and positive girls.’’
