Hendricken junior Mike Gama emerged as the 2008 United States prep hammer champion by winning that event at the Nike Outdoor National Track & Field Championships, held in Greensboro, N.C. over the weekend. Gama threw the 12-pound ball 204 feet, 1 inch (62.21 meters) for the title.

Moses Brown’s Jenna Poggi set a new Rhode Island record in the girls’ pole vault at the recent New England Prep School Track Championships, held at Portsmouth Abbey. Poggi vaulted a winning height of 11 feet, 8 inches (3.56 meters), bettering the mark of 11-1.25 (3.38) set by Toll Gate’s Noelle Battista in 2001.
Another win for Victoria Flowers and Patrick Onye at the New England Hammer Championships.

Last year, Moses Brown gave itself a chance to win its first softball state championship and fell short. This year, the Quakers gave themselves another shot and they got it, as the II-North champions defeated Middletown, 4-1, in the title game of the Amica Insurance Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division II Softball Championship today at Rhode Island College.

After nearly two decades – and 10 innings – La Salle Academy at long last has a state title. The Rams, who also now get to hang their first division championship banner after grabbing a share of the regular-season title with Bay View, edged the defending champion Bengals, 2-1, in 10 innings en route to capturing the Amica Insurance Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division I Softball Championship today at Rhode Island College.

The Interscholastic League has postponed today's Division II baseball championship game between Prout and North Smithfield. The two teams, which split the first two games in their best-of-three series, meet tomorrow at 6 p.m. at McCoy Stadium.
Meanwhile, the junior varsity state track meet scheduled for June 4 at Bishop Hendricken High School has also been postponed to tomorrow, at 3:30 p.m.
Rhode Island Interscholastic League Director of Softball Betty Marquis has announced the time and location for tomorrow's losers'-bracket finals.
Barrington and Middletown will meet in the Division II game at 4 p.m. at Rhode Island College's Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.
That game will be followed by the Divsion I matchup between Bay View and North Kingstown at 6 o'clock.
Four local high school girls received All-America recognition by the U.S. Lacrosse Coaches Association.

Twenty golfers competed, and the top 10 earn tickets to the New England championships.

Sophomore right-hander Macayla Kirylo tossed a four-hitter, striking out 10 and walking one batter, in leading Tolman to an 8-2 victory over Scituate to capture the Division III softball championship today at Rhode Island College. The win gave Tolman a two-game sweep in the best-of-three series. Kirylo was the winning pitcher on Friday in the first game.
