Gama crowned national champ, three state records fall at Nike Outdoor T&F Nationals

Courtesy of Bob Leddy:

Hendricken junior Mike Gama emerged as the 2008 United States prep hammer champion by winning that event at the Nike Outdoor National Track & Field Championships, held in Greensboro, N.C. over the weekend. Gama threw the 12-pound ball 204 feet, 1 inch (62.21 meters) for the title.

Meanwhile, three Rhode Island records fell at the Nike meet. In the girls’ 400-meter intermediate hurdles, La Salle junior Emily Barrett eliminated two existing standards (one a hand-held time; the other auto-timed), with a clocking of 1 minute, 3.16 seconds, winning her heat. Barrett’s time broke a 23-year-old hand-held record of 1:04.4, and a 1999 auto-time of 1:04.85. In the girls’ 4x200-meter relay, La Salle finished in 14th place with a time of 1:43.15 seconds, bettering the state-record 1:45.11 set by Westerly in 2004. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs’ 4x1-mile relay broke its own R.I. mark in that event, finishing eighth with a time of 21:04.19.
