The only scoring came in the second quarter, I'm told. Good job Skyline. Interestingly, we picked Bellevue at the top of our pre-season poll.
Sounds like quite a game. Just got the lowdown from Skyline students at the game. Defensive battle. In the 3rd quarter Bellevue gets a touchdown called back on a penalty after ripping off a 70 yard run. With 3 mins left in the game, Skyline knocking on the door for another score - fumble. Bellevue recovers and drives down to 1st & Goal with about 30 seconds left to play. A little bit of tension in the visitor's stands? Skyline holds on 1st & 2nd down, the clock runs out after they hold again on the 3rd down play and Skyline wins.
This was one of the best football games I have seen. A real defensive struggle to say the least.
I have close relations to Skyline High School, and I thought they played valiantly against the defending champions. Maybe this wasn't the Bellevue team from the past couple of years, but they are still a more-than-respectable team, and to see Skyline go in and take them down from out of nowhere, was shocking to say the least.
Skyline played very well. They made some stupid errors (as would be expected game one), but they recovered from them and won the biggest regular season game of the year.
The one issue I had with Bellevue was that they didn't switch it up enough. From what I saw, they had 4-5 plays. They had a fullback dive, they had a QB bootleg, they had an option, and they had a running back toss-like play. Steve Gervais is a respected and polished coach. These guys practiced for weeks for their biggest game of the year, and they showed up to play.
From what I recall, Bellevue threw 2 passes, one that was overthrown to a receiver who beat his defender, the other, late in the game, a 20 yard out-route. THAT WAS IT! Coach Gervais isn't that stupid! You may be a running-based team, but you cannot rely on that to win you a game when it is just not working.

Towards the end, it was nerve-wracking for any Spartan fan. A fumble, which could have resulted in a touchdown drive to win the game. But the front seven (and the defense as a whole) showed up to play. This group of guys, showed up to play the predicted top team in the state, and they held them scoreless.
If this doesn't get the Spartans some recognition through the state, I don't know what will.
Hard to call this a good game by either team. Skyline looked less bad, but was still utterly hapless on offense. Open receivers missed all night long. Spartans line dominated, but backs are too slow to take advantage of it. Both teams had one big play. Skyline scored on theirs, Bellevue's TD got called back for a hold, which was a good call. Don't know why Bellevue didn't run the WingT much, but it's hard to say their game plan worked.
Incredible battle! Skyline dominated defensively throughout. Too bad the PI's article didn't report the intense game that was actually played.... instead focusing on Skyline's errors and featuring photos of Bellevue ~ what they hey. First time Bellevue's seen a shut-out in 77 years.
These boys earned this victory through their commitment to off-season training, working on the field united, with power and with heart. How about a little credit where the credit it due.
Stayed tuned folks, cuz you ain't seen the best of them yet.
Correction; since 1977, not 77 years.
