Changes ahead for basketball playoffs?

It seems far-fetched, but the Spokesman-Review has an article over financial problems possibly changing basketball playoffs. The argument is that flagging attendence, lower revenues from the current four-day tournaments, added with school administrators being worried about missed school time, is forcing new discussions. Here are some ideas:

1. Four four-team regional sites advancing four teams to the finals.
2. 16 team single elimination, with the first round being Tuesday regionals, and then having the Thursday-Saturday state quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.

Anyone have any better ideas? Elite Eight? Doug Pacey at the TNT likes the idea of a single elimination, to save money and make the playoffs more interesting to fans.
