WIAA to change tournament formats?

Needing to cut costs, the WIAA could change tournament formats -- including basketball -- by 2010. Why? Well tournaments cost money and schools pay for attending. The TNT had a recent article about reducing the 16 team hoops tournaments to eight teams, and eliminating consolation games. Then the WIAA could host the 4A and 3A boys and girls in one location. What do you think about that idea?

Below, I'll post notes from the WIAA Executive Board January 2009 meeting:

  • The 2A, 3A, and 4A State Track and Field Championships schedule will be a two-plus day event. The event will begin Thursday, May 28, 2009 at approximately 4:30 p.m. at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The 1B, 2B, and 1A State Track and Field Championships will remain strictly a two-day event and will begin Friday, May 29, 2009 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

  • The 1B, 2B, and 1A State Volleyball Championships will be held at the Yakima SunDome and the2A, 3A, and 4A State Volleyball Championships will be held at the Toyota Center in Kennewick. All tournaments will be held on the same weekend, November 12 - 14, 2009.

  • The WIAA Executive Board will review the State Basketball tournament format. The earliest any changes would be implemented would be the 2010 - 2011 State Championships.

  • The annual WIAA Winter Coalition meeting took place Monday, January 26, at the Spirit of Washington Events Center in Renton. The day consisted of a review and discussion of the proposed amendments to be voted upon by the 2009 Representative Assembly on April 24, 2009. Karst Brandsma, WIAA District 1, was elected to receive the 2009 Gareth Giles Memorial Recognition Award on April 24, 2009.

  • The 2009 WIAA Salute to Spirit, presented by Farmers Insurance, with 20 teams and 466

  • participants preceded the 2009 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Cheerleading Championships at the Comcast Arena in Everett on Saturday, January 24, 2009. An impressive 51 teams, with 937 participants competed in the State Cheerleading Championships. A total of 2,617 spectators attended both events.
